Just some blacks. Never heard of someone shouting "thug" at an old black woman on her way to church, but I suppose it is possible. I have used it to describe white people though, but they usually try to act black so six of one, half a dozen of the other.

Thug has been embraced by the black inner city culture. Rap songs glorify it and gangsters want to emulate the thug lifestyle. The only reason that it is ascribed with black people so often is because they actively adopted it and glorified it.

The local television newsmedia refers to them as "young gentlemen." I.e., "Two young gentlemen were arrested Monday for murder ... " "The young gentleman is being sought by police in connection with ... " The young gentleman this and the young gentleman that, etc., etc. That's very nice.

According to KRS1, Sherman is not a thug because "a real thug is a thug that's hush". Sherman is anything but "hush". Also, I feel it to be pre-emptively necessary that point out that Sherman is also not a "real gangsta-ass (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)" because, according to Scarface of the Geto Boys, "real gangsta-ass (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)s don't run for (*)(*)(*)(*) because real gangsta-ass (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)s can't run fast." In all seriousness, the term "Thug" does not indicate race and is not exclusively used to describe people of a specific race. A thug is someone who is a hoodlum, or perhaps a goon. They come in ALL races and there is nothing racist about it. I'm wondering why the media is jumping all over this like it has.
I first noticed its use towards Blacks during the Trayvon Martin incident. One could, and has, argued that he felt threatened by Zimmerman, others say he went after him. Either way, he gets called a thug. On the other hand, Zimmerman had a record of violence, but those same people do not call him a thug. The use seems rather selective.
