The manifesto that the presumed New Zealand shooter published is shorter and “more sloppy” than the one written by a Norwegian right-wing extremist who killed 77 people in 2011, but expresses similar sentiments, a Swedish terror expert said Friday.

Magnus Ranstorp of the Swedish National Defense College says the shooter is against mass immigration and “has to some extend the same themes as (Anders Behring) Breivik,” who posted his 1,500-page manifesto online before carrying out his deadly attacks.

Ranstorp told Swedish radio Friday that the New Zealand shooter, who killed at least 49 people in two mosques in Christchurch on Friday, claims to “have been in contact with Breivik’s sympathizers.”

On July 22, 2011, Breivik killed eight people with a car bomb in Oslo and then opened fire at an island summer camp run by the left-wing Labor Party’s youth wing, killing 69. He is serving a 21-year prison sentence.

Breivik’s lawyer, Oeystein Storrvik, told Norway’s VG newspaper that his client has “very limited contacts with the surrounding world so it seems very unlikely that he has had contact.” Storrvik was not immediately available for comment.

Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg told Norwegian broadcaster NRK that the shooter’s manifesto “unfortunately gives associations to a situation in Norway” that she described as “one of the worst in our time.”

On Twitter, Ranstorp noted that the New Zealand shooter claimed he would leave prison after 27 years and likened himself to late South African President Nelson Mandela, saying he would get the Nobel Peace Prize.

“Yet another narcissistic right-wing extremist terrorist who has a distorted fantasy world,” Ranstorp wrote.

The world is well aware of the eternal stalemate near civil war of the US, this topic 99% separate of that.

Unfortunately this is not the case. The men (and occasional women) who commit such crimes are not insane - by which I mean they do not meet the medical or legal text book definition of insanity which applies more to individuals suffering diseases of the mind like schizophrenia, serious depression or 'manic' conditions. These illnesses may be more or less permanent in effect or episodic but the point is at the time such people commit violent crime they are almost always suffering from delusions of some kind. The key point is that to be found medically or legally 'mad' a person has to be incapable of perceiving normal 'reality' and at the time they offend.

Murderers like the ones we are talking about are not mad and they do not meet the textbook definition of madness. They are perfectly aware of their surroundings and know what they are doing at the time they do it - often in clinical detail. They simply don't care that what they are doing is perceived as wrong by others.

They may suffer from underlying personality disorders that effect their ability to empathise with others true, in which case they will share traits associated with your common garden variety serial killer. But again these people are also not necessarily 'mad' - at least not the high end, functioning sociopaths that are the key stone of so many crime novels these days. They simply have all the empathy of a rattlesnake when it comes to their chosen victims.

So the reason this guy was not caught is that like Brevik he was able to 'fit in', plan carefully and outside of those right wing forums we have read about he has been able to hold is tongue and maintain 'op sec'.

In hind sight some people who knew him might end up thinking to themselves 'I should have seen the signs' but by and large they would be fooling themselves.

So all of the above means he wouldn't have been on anybodies 'radar' Police or public. Also unless we find out about some per-existing mental health issues (which I doubt because they will have his medical records already) this guy is also not going to be able to claim 'madness' as a defense.

 

On the contrary they know that what they are doing will be seriously pleasing to many.
