Thenni would imsgine that suffering is in those peoples future. The Vietnamese experienced this, they were invaded by the communists who in turn absolutely ruined the country and it didn't turn around for them until they embraced capitalism. Communism does harm even when it tries to do good. Forced collectivization is just a bad concept
The citizens of HK had lots of warning of the transgression. If they expected their lives wouldnt change they were naive
They should welcome a reduction in freedom if they’re given advance notice? So if the U.S. government decides to rescind the Bill of Rights and they give us one year advance notice, we should accept it?
No to your first question. They should have migrated. The citizens knew UK was pulling out as per the agreement. To expect they'll keep their freedoms under communist China isnt projecting reality. Pretty simple. As for your second question, the topic is HK. Americans on many forums try to relate all world political issues with their own, left, right, issues.. ..and it's darn annoying.
Sure ... the general hate on communism, often without real reason and generalization ... I know! Unfortunatelly I can't agree with you here in general. Sure, most communist regimes were evil or became later when in power evil I will not defend this or come with bad blabbering of that these regimes were not really communist or so ... BUT to support the devil to fight the satan is never a good decision and this is what the US decision was here and so often else!
Migration isn’t easy and not always possible. Some people like where they live. It’s up to the government to serve the people and not vice versa. The government needs to obey what the people want. If it doesn’t do that, it’s time to strike back. Revolutions against tyranny are a good thing. I’m on the side of the people in HK. Screw the commies.
Ehm ... you know how many people leved in Hong Kong at this time, eh? And who should take these millions of people please? The UK? Why ...? it was clear that Hong Kong is only leased and that China will never extend the leasing contract ... and so UK had no chance to to what happened! You make things much to easy as they are in reality!
Yes in 1999 around the same number of refugees that have fled Syria and have found new countries. Not all citizens of HK would leave. Some content to stay and be ruled by China.
Change most to all. The very purpose of communism is to oppress thoes who had money, to take what they have and keep it. That very concept is evil. There has never been a benevolent communist country. Communism is based on anger and envy. It's goal is to take over the world.
Good. I'm never a supporter of communist countries but I'm simply pointing out what should have been obvious to those citizens. It is brave of the protesters however, China in this era shows zero indication its regime is under threat. In fact I believe it is solid as a rock. It would be wiser for such citizens (including Taiwan) to wait until the cracks show up then join the world with a joint opposition. Just my theory.
No human being using logic would support that generality of what liberals do or think. The point is fabricated and doesn't reflect observable facts. The right wing are the enemies of America, they can't even keep white people.
dont know what you smoking, thinking HK ever had freedom. under 100yrs of britaish rule, it never had democracy, all its governor are caucasian and appointed by british government, mostly from scotland. majority of the hongkongers were treated as 2nd class citizen uptill 80s, hongkoner weren't allow to purchase housing at the best location, those properties are reserved for europeans. All government doc/writing are in english as requirement, despite everybody write chinese and speak cantonese. all high level position were occupied by europeans, the list goes on and on. this is something after i talk to few old generation hongkoners who immigrant to US later long time ago. and its also in the history HK was prosperous before in late 90s and early 2000s, mainly because back then it was gateway to china, but now that has been substitute with Shanghai, shenzhen, beijing etc etc. HK dont have industry/tech, its finance are substitute by shanhai, and has already lost its former glory. its tourist industry mostly rely on china, but after 2014 protest, most chinese stop going to HK. its main fresh water are supply from china, so does its most energy needs. there is a reason why most protestors are youngester, most old generation live through british rule and remember how they were treated.
lol like you ever talk to actual hongkonger or even chinese here in US. Macao was occupied by portuguese yet you never see them doing the same thing. its simple really, like some POTUS said, its the economy, economy ,economy, todays HK economy is stagnant, it lost its gateway to china after been replaced by other chinese cities. rich chinese buying properties in HK by the thousands which make them even more resentful toward mainland chinese. chinese tourism going down, and HK dont have other industry/tech to make up the slowing economy, along with raising housing price, raising living cost etc etc, and stagnant wages (sound familiar?). people have discontent due to economy.
Not being critical at all but perspectives from westerners of free democracies towards any communist countries mught be askew from reality. Yes we can be justified being alarmed of reports of Chinese citizens losing organs for example or restrictions we (especially US citizens) would not tolerate. However I'm not convinced a high percentage of Chinese are that unhappy. Where are the refugee boats? Where is the lack of prestige cars owned by the rich? Where is the famine? For all we know Chinese might be horrified of the treatment our aborigines are treated or how a wall is being erected or how singers and actors are God like figures. Somehow from my uneducated, low knowledge view I'm suspicious some citizens of HongKong are resisting ANY changes China wants to introduce.
Mao killed 65 million. I doubt the Chinese in HK experienced that kind of carnage under British rule.
Many of the chinese in Hong Kong were refugees from mainland china during the Mao years Because the brits were far, far better than the communists
this is like saying germany should be under US control due to nazi. or russia should become part of western world due to stalin. mao is dead, so does the other two. are you seriously saying those once under brit colony should thank the brit for treating their local as 2nd class citizens.
