The majority of men who have sex with men in southern Africa are bisexual, and a significant proportion have concurrent sexual relationships with both men and women, investigators report in the online edition of Sexually Transmitted Infections. The investigators suggest that this finding should occasion a rethinking of the factors driving the HIV epidemic in the region. http://www.aidsmap.com/Many-souther...onships-with-both-men-and-women/page/1438860/ Doesn't this suggest that sexual orientation may have some strong statistical correlation to race/ethnicity? (Or could there be some unique cultural factors in Africa that could explain this?) It seems very unusual for the prevalence of bi men to be so much more common than gay men in a population. The percentage of the population (at least in American and European countries) that is gay is estimated to be between 2.5 and 4 percent, while the percentage of bisexual men is estimated to be between 1.5 and 2 percent. However, studies have found that 80 percent of bisexual men end up in heterosexual relationships, so maybe it could be possible the real percentage of bisexual men is actually higher? (i.e. It's easier for some bisexual men to identify as normal heterosexual) It is known that men in Africa statistically tend to be less monogamous (possibly higher sex drive due to higher racial testosterone levels) so, potentially, that could drive them to seek sex outside of committed monogamous relationships, and so while his bisexual counterpart in a white country might have settled down into a relationship having sex with just one woman, he's out there having sex with his woman and other men. This is all wild speculation, of course. Or maybe they are so horny in Africa, that makes the population pool statistically less likely to discriminate by gender?
Yes, the one where, when caught engaging in homosexuality, their culture puts a tire around their neck and lights it on fire.
Hmm, thought the post was referring to South Africa. They have a pretty progressive view of LGBTQ rights. Guess that’s not where the OP was talking about??
That’s gender based violence not violence against LGBTQ persons. I drew my assessment from this article. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_rights_in_South_Africa Of course I’ve never been there so I have no first hand experience.
Oh I see. It's off topic to point out that just because they have some things on paper, and contrast that with an example, it's off topic. Do you understand comparisons? Africa, including SA, is the most violent continent for any gay person to find themselves in.
Close to 60% of men acknowledge they have had a sexual experience with another male at some point in their life and the vast majority of them identify as heterosexual. The 4%-8% of males that identify as homosexual is likely on the low end — Kinsey’s studies put homosexuality (KS6) around 10% — and the number of bisexuals (KS2 - KS5) will likely not be known until the stigma surrounding sexuality is eliminated completely.
Yes, but that just makes it all the more remarkable. Because you'd think many of those bisexual men would just choose to stick to their heterosexual side, and there would be fewer bisexual men in the statistics.
I think it's a cultural thing. Returning veterans from Iraq report that, although being homosexual is a serious crime, unmarried men may "have fun" with each other, and the practice is accepted as a cultural norm.
You cant confuse this with Christianity. Bibical morals is about whats right and wrong not about looking down on people one finds icky.
