Should be at least 21 days. Odds are higher than the general population that a returning citizen is an asymptomatic vector.

We hear a lot of news about the dire situation in New York.. New York state? Anyway I was just wondering about the rest of the country...is it as bad all over or are there only pockets. We had a video meeting on Tuesday and our guys in New York (mostly Brits btw) were saying that they were pretty much holed up and not going out except for essentials is that the case all over?

Sure, but there are precisely ZERO bans in the UK. Someone could board a plane in New York tomorrow and go to London if there was a flight available. Seems insane right?

No, not all, for the reasons I explained.

And, no more "insane" than the fact that people can fly into the US, no problem, from any country other than Iran, China and Europe.

Edited to add: just noticed you said you're British, so guess the US comparison is redundant.

Tbh, I've thought you've been misinformed about the whole thing.

When you say the borders are open, I remind you we're in a lock down lol.

You're going on like it's business as usual as if the ferries are still coming over from France and tourists are still jetting in, IDK.

When I say the borders are closed, there's hardily anything in the otherwise busy air, you still think the UK is open, or something.
Maybe the UK's open to the odd flight from Switzerland or something, IDK, but the way you're moaning/singling out my country, you're going on like it's business as usual here, when it's almost as dead as Belgium.
TBH, it's still much livelier than Brussels/anywhere in Belgium on a good day/normal/pre Covid-19 time, but, that's because Belgium is so mind numbingly boring and Thornton Heath during this lock down looks livelier than Brussels in pre pandemic times.

Well Brighton's like 60 miles away, so, hmm, 15 mile limit?
    Where did you hear that?
    I didn't hear that.
Hell, I heard we're not meant to go more than a mile or 2 for exercise.

No it is not. I am in Colorado, rural county. Our grocery stores are completely restocked. We have very strict crowd control in most open businesses. People follow the stay at home as good as possible.
My business is essential, we are open, but have very strict rules for our customers and naturally the crowd control.
80% of our businesses are closed, including hotels and motels, bars, restaurants and so on.
I fear most will never open up again we are a summer tourist area and were just coming out of winter hibernation.

My point is very simple. Every other nation which has been significantly impacted has implemented travel bans. The UK hasn't implemented one single travel ban during the entire pandemic. I just find that a little odd, don't you? Meanwhile, all EU countries have implemented some bans.

I assume that there's not actually anything happening in Thornton Heath other than supermarket shopping, like everywhere else in the UK.

Are you saying that symptoms can first become apparent as long as 21 days after infection?

I think that it's probably only relevant for Brits returning from overseas. They don't have to go through one single check at the airport do they? They just breeze straight through, possible to the supermarket?

Here in Australia, we had a guy doing some pretty high speeds in a Lamborghini. He was busted - it turns out that he was in a bit of a hurry to get to a hospital to get a COVID-19 test! Turns out that he was positive!

Is there anything stopping them from doing whatever they want?

The Gesundheitsamt (health department) controls it and violations can be punished with fines up to 25,000 € and 5 years imprisonment.

I've read that incubation might be as long as 25 days. 21 days would cover most of the danger. A month would be a hard sell.
