Lush interior rainforest in being cut down at a rapid rate in British Columbia, Canada. https://thenarwhal.ca/canadas-forgotten-rainforest/ Researchers who have actually gone out there say it is being cut down at a rate similar to what's going on in the Amazon rainforest. But this is in Canada. And few Canadians are aware of what's going on, because this great forest is in a remote area. Seems like nobody really cares, and nothing will be done. I'm all for managed forest practices, but this sounds like it may be excessive. Canada's government is all talk about good things and "protection", but when push comes to shove, logging is simply too important to the country's economy, and there are not enough adequate safeguards in place for this great forest. They should harvest timber from other lower quality forests, but those forests are less desirable because the trees are smaller and much shorter in diameter. Many more trees have to be chopped down to get the same amount of wood. Also the cedar species is more valuable than pine.
I fought for decades against the same thing in Washington state. They stopped logging in national forests and thousands of good paying jobs were lost and then the state sold off all their timber rights to weyrhauser and now they ship all the logs to China for milling. Lose lose.
It seems like the current fad in the environmental movement is Global Warming™, so there's not much talk or consciousness about deforestation. You can bring up clearcutting to an average Progressive and get a blank stare, like they don't really care. Who cares about the forest when the world is imminently going to end due to Climate Change™?
Fake News. Reforestation in BC is alive and well. Reforestation is also alive and well in the Amazon region. https://www.for.gov.bc.ca/hfp/publications/00131/ https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/...urces/sustainable-forest-management-practices
We are not "deforesting" anything. How do you know that the Earth is warming? Have you measured its temperature within any usable accuracy?
USA has been the best nation on earth in protecting its forests and animals the last 50 yrs. I assumed Canada was the same ???
Wow!!!!! P. M. Trudeau has done quite a job of selling himself and his party to his allies the Green Party!
Canada’s leftist have long been focused on economic and social issues rather than the environment . American leftist used to be all about the environment but are now on to global warming and don’t give a rats ass about real environmental issues.
And is being replaced, as it has for over 100 years. This source appears to be a woke environmentalist publication that is rather coy about where it gets its funding. One article absurdly bemoans the "racism" shown by use of terms like, "Asian killer hornets." All licensed tree harvesting in BC requires replacement with site-appropriate species. Why? Claim unsupported by evidence.
An old-growth forest that has been cut can take 300-400 years to fully recover and for the trees to regrow to the size they were before. I've seen for myself, firsthand, forests that have been logged out more than 100 years ago, and it is obvious they do not look the same as virgin forests in the same area. The trees are shorter, a much thinner diameter, and much more closely spaced together, not as much open space between the trees. And huge stumps from over a 100 years ago can still be seen, giving some indication what the trees used to be like.
bringiton, these old growth forests are really impressive, and it is quite an experience to be in one. Maybe you have never had the experience of walking through a temperate rainforest, they are much more impressive and majestic than an ordinary forest many people may be used to. If you actually walked through one, and then walked through one that had been logged out 50 to 100 years ago, the difference would be very apparent to you. You'd think the virgin forest was definitely much better and more amazing to walk through, though you might not be able to put your finger on exactly why until someone specifically pointed things out. These are special forests, different from the regular forest that can pretty much be found all over Canada.
Just walk into Menards and try to buy some cedar beams. I'm kind of amazed anyone can afford cedar. 4 x 12 x 16' cedar timber $240 plus tax.
Yes, it's an impressive experience. But it's an experience that is just as impressive in 10km^2 of old growth forest as in 10Mkm^2.
Some Canadians think of me as being somewhat politically left due to my ideas on a Basic Minimum Income. COVID 19 and an unconditional income supplement for all Canadians? .....as well as for the fact that I do take climate change itself seriously. How much longer will central Antarctica save our coastal communities?
Central Antarctica didn’t save this coastal community. https://api.nationalgeographic.com/...mine-underwater-cave-surprises-archaeologists
