I thought I'd start a thread about the rush to rename everything to avoid the possible taint of racism. This way we can reduce the number of individual threads about different things being renamed. I'm starting out with country band Lady Antebellum which is changing their name because of associations with Antebellum:
Update: After 14 years and eight album releases, Grammy-winning country trio Lady Antebellum has officially changed its name, dropping the “Antebellum” due to “associations that weigh down this word referring to the period of history before the Civil War, which includes slavery.” From now on, the band will officially go by its longtime nickname, Lady A. https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment...-slavery-we-have-been-awakened-171041226.html
If they feel that their band name might offend someone - and that bothers them - why should we be concerned with THEIR choice to rename THEIR band?
Never even heard of them till this thread. And I’m willing to bet most of the people “outraged” over this didn’t either
Been a fan since the beginning of their careers. I have actually been to one of the concerts. Not impressed with them caving to the masses. They believed in their name when they decided on it all those years ago, and there is nothing wrong with it.
Good for them! That is the whole point of these protests, to start having white folks pause to think about their choices in the context of others.
Believed what? The OP link explains how they came up with the name and it sounds like it was a rushed decision. Most band names are rather pedestrian for the most part and few have some deeper meaning.
Not everything. Only Democratic Party history that current Democrats think they can tie around the necks of the Republicans who freed the slaves from their bondage. Exalted Cleagle Robert Byrd is still revered, honored with a statue in the Capitol Building. The Senate Office Building still honors the name of Racist Democrat Richard Russell. White Supremacist Democrat Stephen A. Douglas is honored with a monument in Democrat Chicago. Most prominently, the patron saint of progressivism, Woodrow Wilson, was not only a fascist, but a slobbering, hate mongering racist.
