Trump's trade war on China was a failure in every possible way

The Biden administration plans to review the phase one U.S.-China trade deal, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on Friday. Based on publicly available data, it's hard to imagine they'll find anything other than a debacle.

In following Trump, Biden has the same advantage Obama had in following Bush. Not screwing up massively is good enough to look good by comparison. The US's China policy is no different. I'm encouraged that Biden is taking a methodical approach based on the findings of his various agencies in terms of how to deal with China.

It's not going to be the unilateral approach Trump took. It will likely include the cooperation of allies, the ones Trump alienated with his idiotic tariffs. I expect regional pressure, to the extent it can be brought to bear after China bolstered its regional economic alliances while Trump was golfing, will play a role.

 

When I see a VP take his son to China and son comes back with 1,000,000 a month for something he doesn't even have experience in, and that Son's Father is named "Joe", I attribute it to CHINA JOE being the most perfect name for it.

Trump put China, N. Korea and Iran in their place, and we see here from this OP that biden himself is claiming that Trump failed on the trade war with China? LOL! My ears perked up when I heard this! This is the first Biden nominee who hasn't put on the knee pads for China. Naturally he has China ties in his past, but maybe he's had a change of heart. I do think Trump has caused a permanent change in potential foreign and trade policy with China that even China lovers like most of the Democratic Party can't ignore. They will at least have to give lip service to getting tough with China, which is better than simply enriching Biden's family.

I'll say I'm hopeful.

Trump did none of those things. He may have tried, but he definitely did not succeed because Donald Trump doesn't know a thing about world diplomacy, nor does he care about world diplomacy. The world saw him for what he is. A blowhard more concerned with being adored than in being a leader. Maybe someday his supporters will no longer need the fictional narratives they insulate themselves with and they too will see him with open eyes.

 

No, it is not, and I've never called him that, but you can go with "China Joe" if you like. I don't mind at all. Most political nastiness is based on misinformation, including that nickname. I've personally been called worse.

 

He also knows nothing about international trade. His tariff nonsense was near disastrous for many Americans.
