Facebook is causing social divisiveness. It's algorithm skews to "exploit the human brain’s attraction to divisiveness". Taking the click bait leads to more and more extreme content that leads down a rabbit hole where the world appears dire and the opposition evil. Facebook has researched this and is aware of this as per WSJ: "Mr. Zuckerberg and other senior executives largely shelved the basic research [...] and weakened or blocked efforts to apply its conclusions to Facebook products. Facebook policy chief Joel Kaplan, who played a central role in vetting proposed changes, argued at the time that efforts to make conversations on the platform more civil were “paternalistic,” said people familiar with his comments." Here's more
While Facebook's algorithm contributes, so do users who go along with it. They choose to click the bait and cocoon themselves in safe spaces of extreme views. Facebook is more of a facilitator than a doer. It allows people to end up this way, but it doesn't force them to. YouTube can be similar. It recommends channels similar to what you are already watching, so if you're into Fox and Newsmax, you're going to get more of that kind of insanity. Perhaps interest-based algorithms are the core issue and the thing about which we might say, just because you can doesn't mean you should! Just because we can have these algorithms doesn't mean Facebook and YouTube necessarily should use them. So, I see solutions both in address that and discussing the problem of so many people allowing themselves to become radicalized by the crap they encounter online thanks in part, and only in part, to these algorithms.
I agree with the theory that social medial is the main cause for the division between left and right.
Naw, Zuckerberg is just a very, very fortunate Millennial who happened to find the right niche market to attract millions of 'lemmings' who 'dive off the cliff' because they don't want to have to work very hard, or think very much, and who have LOTS of time on their hands (along with too little between their ears).... Facebook evil? No... rather, just an obviously frivolous, stupid waste of time... the 21st-century equivalent of masturbation.
"Frivolous"? Facebook has a bit larger impact on society than you are giving it credit for. Facebook is the reason for the popularity of QAnon. Women are especially vulnerable. They are more interested in protecting children and click on child trafficking issues. The algorithm will give them more and lead them to eventual extreme views of QAnon. All of which Facebook is aware of.
I honestly can't imagine why anybody over the age of 12-13 would be interested in FaceBook. I feel like if the only updates I have about your life are through social media, we really aren't "friends".
I've never understood why people blame social media companies and not the people who are creating all the content you find on those social media company's sites. Those people? Us. You want to blame Facebook for divisiveness when you should really blame the people being divisive.
All I can say is that I tried Facebook out over ten years ago. What a stupid, juvenile pain in the ass! I ditched it after a month....
I was booted off Facebook on April 19, 2021 but I feel that they did me a favour..... I am already having far more fun on MeWe than I ever had on Facebook...... I am a known Trump supporter but it was the questions related to the vaccines that actually got me permanently deleted from Facebook. I believe that Mr. Mark Zuckerberg is astonishingly naive and is playing around with a level of darkness that he could not hardly begin to comprehend considering how young and naive he obviously is. Karl Marx is said to have been Theistic Luciferian but lied and said that he was an Atheist..... in order to be able to conquer Russia with his crazy theories.
I haven’t been on FB for years and don’t miss it at all. The only form of social media I am on is forums like this
There are foreigners on here as well. I noticed someone from Canada and Australia in my short time here so far
Have you ever heard the phrase "a good man can't be stolen"? How that is applicable here is that no amount of foreign influence should have had any bearing on our relationships with one another. The fact that it did is a deficiency within us.
I think some politicians even outsource supporters from overseas, so it's not just other countries governments, the American people are being manipulated big time
don't disagree, but as history has shown us, propaganda works, especially when one wants to believe it or think it hurts those they do not like
Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg are not evil. People choose to be part of Facebook I chose not to be. If you invite him into your life and give him all of your information you cannot be angry with him when he uses it. This should go without saying but I'm going to say it anyway. With regard to Facebook the user is not the customer they are the product. You can choose to be someone's product or not they're not evil for giving you that choice.
I disagree with this sentiment. Social media is simply the conduit for which people divide themselves into groups. Now you think this is human nature and all social media does is exploit it. What we would have to do to but it stopped to this division in our country the only thing we can do the only thing that will work no matter what happens with social media is to put our differences aside. You can do that on social media it's just most people don't want to. It takes humility and humbleness. These are the things missing they weren't taken away by social media.
Facebook executives weren't happy when their own data showed it perpetuates a right-wing echo chamber Despite claims by some Republican politicians led by former President Trump that social-media sites censor conservative views, Facebook's data makes it clear: The social network's best-performing content is almost entirely from right- and far-right-wing publications and personalities. https://www.businessinsider.com/fac...ecutive-pushback-2021-7?utm_source=reddit.com Where's cancel culture when you need it?
How old are you youngin? Back in the day we had Klanners and Westboro Baptists but the internetz blew them away with it mass appeal and algorithms that can lead the unwary down a rabbit hole of paranoia and conspiracies.
