A friend of mine was dating somebody for about a month when it came out they don't like dogs. The relationship ended immediately. When hearing this it seemed dramatic to me, but on further thought I realized I would react the same way. I can't be with somebody who does not like animals. And I simply dislike people who don't like dogs. Is this a common thing or does it make me a bigot?
Some people, particularly from poorer Asian countries eat dogs. My Vietnamese girlfriend's dog just had puppies and we are screening potential owners for them, and part of it is determining if they will resell the pup to a dog meat vendor.
I try to keep folks with those kinds of beliefs out of my social circles. We all have dogs. If you can't tolerate them, bye.
Does this position also apply to cats? I prefer cats to most dogs. Dogs are fine, but not in the grocery store, restaurant or other places where there is close contact with the general public.
Dogs (and cats, but to a lesser extent) are a huge part of my life as an owner, foster, rescuer, advocate and volunteer for several organizations including free spay and neuter clinics. As such, it would take a month to discover our differences - and likely it would be more about me not being their cup of tea rather than me not liking them. Generally, people who don't like dogs (or cats) feel that way as a result of some kind of negative experience.
Yes. I would include cats. I like cats less than dogs, but I don't think I could like somebody who dislikes cats.
There can be also a real phobia, it's not only about likes or dislikes. Just this morning I've seen a young girl escaping from what she described as a terrifying insect: I was curious and I checked ... and I found out it was a butterfly! Phobias aside, if I have to think to myself, I do like pets, but I would never keep a pet in my home: I've got no time for that. So, if my mate has got time to keep a pet ... ok, no problem. Otherwise the pet will leave my home.
I love dogs. They go so well with mustard and onions. I don't really tend to like people who don't like animals. Dogs, cats, goats, horses, I've had a lot of animals and I loved them all. How can anyone not love a puppy or a kitten?
I think it represents an irrational response or over-reactions to something, I just don't know quite what. There is nothing about people who don't like dogs that is universally true about their character, attributes etc, except the fact that they do not like dogs. I don't think you need to date them, or marry them, but to dislike them as a class seems weird. Some of my best friends didn't like dogs. Some of my best friends have been dogs.
I'm really a dog people. It doesn't create a problem for friendships, but yes if you have to live with someone who don't like dogs, that's something else.
It works both ways. There are other people who might find it difficult to date you if you were a dog lover. Dogs make the whole home smell, they make the person smell, and many people are not enthusiastic about dogs nipping at their heels and getting their saliva all over them. Not to mention how the fur gets all over everything. If I were an employer, I might even be a little reluctant to hire someone who had dogs, except for the unfairness of it.
Oof. I tend to not like dogs, but its more complicated than that. My problem with dogs is usually people. First off, a lot of dogs arent gonna have a very happy life being alone in a house all day. Maybe some breeds, like beagles or chiuauas can be exceptions, but generally a dog is not happy as a mere pet. They are meant to be companions who serve a purpose, not just accessories to a home. But they're also territorial pack animals. Their preset is to be with other dogs and fight other dogs. So you cant just let them be free and roam because they will find other dogs and generate problems. The instincts that cause this can be suppressed, but it requires breaking the dogs 'will' or natural instincts, which seems like a pretty shitty thing to do just for fun, when you dont need to have a dog. And if you dont like picking up fresh **** with your hands several times a day, then you dont really like dogs, because with rare exception that has to happen, and everyone in my life who 'likes dogs' refuses to clean their dogs **** out of my yard and I ****ing hate it. And its not the dogs fault, its shitty humans. But I still makes me not want the dogs around.
I am glad you don't blame the dogs. It is bad humans who don't clean up after their dogs. There are plenty of good humans who do take better care. Generally, I find that dogs are better people than people are.
But dogs just have to lie around all day and bark occasionally. On the other hand, people have to make a living and work like dogs.
