Among all dangerous scenarios in the Middle East right now, the Egyptian one is worst -- even worse than Iran. Egypt has a destabilized dictatorial military junta trying to consolidate its control over a roiling, combative radical-Islamic gutter, Anna. Why Obama's Transportation Secretary's son and his cohort wanted to thrust themselves into the sewer of Egyptian politics is beyond me, but Obama needs to take control of this situation with a loud, stern voice telling all factions: "Do not dare to hold American citizens against their will on your trumped-up charges! Release them immediately!"

The Iranians used similar trumped-up charges against American citizens in Iran, Anna, and our wonderous hyperlib President Jimmy Carter did NOTHING... day after day after day. Maybe I should be hoping the Egyptians keep their American captives for 444 days, too... it did "wonders" for Jimmy Carter in his election effort against Ronald Reagan....

Gadhaffi, Hussein, Asad, Amadinejad, and all the rest of these ******* dictators can die and go straight to hell for all I care, Anna. That's not the point! The point, which evidently eluded you, is in pointing out the stunning inconsistency in President Warlord deciding (in complete violation of the War Powers Resolution) to engage in military hostilities against the government of Libya, which posed no threat or harm to the United States, while turning a blind eye to this outrage in Egypt!

Now we have another bunch of ******* military figures in Egypt who DO pose a threat to American citizens, but President Warlord does, and says NOTHING. Obama went out of his way to make a very bold, unequivocal "statement" to the entire world by dropping a billion dollars worth of bombs and missiles on Gadhaffi, but he stands as silent and meek as a lamb when challenged by this dictatorial military rabble in Cairo. Do you really fail to see the irony of this? Probably... the hyperliberal Left sees only what it wants to see, and disregards the rest....

American citizens who are not diplomats are subject to the laws in the countries in which they find themselves. They do not have immunity from the law. Even if the US does not agree with that law. That is the bottom line pure and simple.

The US citizens held in Iran were diplomats- these US citizens are not.

There should be a freeze of all Egyptian assets in the U.S. as well as an immediate cut off of all funds to Egypt till the situation is resolved.

...and you can guarantee the liberal MSM will NOT report the parading of headless Americans through their streets by muslims as well. Heaven forbid one of their pet groups they want supported to increase the speed of America's destruction would look bad to the rest of the world...after all, can't be reporting fact or truth without a TON of spin to make their AGENDA look good, can they?

I repeat - How do you know what he's doing or not doing? Do you honestly think the State Department isn't totally involved in this incident? But these people have been detained for 8 days and you're ready for war?

I can't believe you can't see the difference in what happened in Libya and what's going on in Egypt. But the hyperwarmongering Right doesn't believe in trying to use diplomacy and avoid war and death and destruction. They believe that every time somebody sneezes in our direction we should whip out our six-shooters and pow-pow-pow! After all - in your words - the Egyptian people are only "*******s" who should be bowing and scraping to us now - even though they were able to depose their dictator without U.S. intervention. A dictator that you admired because he was willing to take $1 billion a year from us in return for doing Israel's bidding and helping them keep the Palestinians sealed up in Gaza?

I guess the Arab spring has chilled into the Islamonazi winter. I saw this coming and predicted it. Anything Islamo is a fricking disaster and this situation proves it. In Libya the Tauregs are waging war, in Syria thousands are murdered by the regime, in Afghanistan the Taliban is negociating for peace and preparing to take over once America leaves, in Iran the regime is working on getting nukes and Israel is preparing to strike and we know this because Paneta and Obama stabbed our best ally in the middle east in the back publically. Leftists and Islamonazi's suck. Get a clue.

Cabinet backs bill to register NGOs funded by foreign states
    By DAN IZENBERG
    02/15/2010 03:26

No organization in Israel would be allowed to receive money from a foreign political entity unless it registers.

NGOs that receive funding from a “foreign political entity” would have to register with the Political Party Registrar and declare in all public appearances that they represent an organization that receives funding from such an entity, according to a bill sponsored by Likud MK Ze’ev Elkin that received government backing from the Ministerial Committee on Legislation on Sunday.

According to the explanation attached to the measure, its aim is to “increase the transparency and to correct lacunas in the law regarding the funding of political activity in Israel by foreign political entities.”

The bill defines “political activity” as “activity aimed at influencing public opinion in Israel or one of the branches of government in Israel regarding any element of Israel’s domestic or foreign policy.”

The legislation is part of a campaign against Israeli human rights non-profit organizations that receive funding from foreign states and the European Union for their activities.

For the past few years, right-wing organizations, including NGO Monitor, have emphasized whenever they mention these left-wing organizations that they receive money from foreign governments.

According to the bill, no organization in Israel would be allowed to receive money from a foreign political entity unless it registers with the Registrar of Political Parties. The registrar would be responsible for the registry completely independent of his registry of political parties.

The NGO would have to list the aims of the organization, its address and the identification number of every key activist, including directors, members of the executive committee, active directors and those authorized to sign checks.

Each time the organization receives funding from a foreign country, it would inform the registrar and provide details regarding the identity of the donor, the sum donated, its purpose, and the commitments made by the recipients to the donors.

Any organization that receives financial support from a foreign country would make note of this fact in any document it writes that involves political activity. Any member of such an organization would have to declare the fact that he receives financial support from a foreign country whenever he makes a speech having anything to do with the subject for which he received the money.

All the senior members of the NGO who meet the criteria of the bill and do not register would be liable to one year in jail.

The ministerial committee decided that the bill would be formulated in coordination with the Ministry of Justice. Elkin told The Jerusalem Post that this was standard procedure for bills of this sort and he was not worried that the Justice Ministry would dilute its provisions.

MKs co-sponsoring the bill include Avraham Michaeli (Shas), David Rotem (Israel Beiteinu), Othniel Schneller (Kadima), Yariv Levin and Tzipi Hotoveli (Likud) and Michael Ben-Ari (National Union).

Regulation of Foreign Funding of NGOs and Foreign NGOs

    Foreign Funding of U.S. NGOs

As Secretary Clinton has said, “in the United States, as in many other democracies, it is legal and acceptable for private organizations to raise money abroad and receive grants from foreign governments, so long as the activities do not involve specifically banned sources, such as terrorist groups.” As a general matter, U.S. law imposes no limits or restrictions on the receipt of foreign funding by NGOs operating in the United States. Of course, laws that are generally applicable to all Americans may apply to NGOs, such as restrictions on receiving contributions from a terrorist organization. There are also restrictions on direct financial support of political candidates by foreign individuals.

Foreign NGOs Operating in the United States

Before foreign organizations are able to conduct activities in any particular U.S. state, they must apply for a license to conduct business in that state. This process is similar to the incorporation process for U.S. NGOs described above. Like domestic NGOs, foreign organizations can apply to the Internal Revenue Service for recognition as charitable or social welfare organizations under the Internal Revenue Code. Although such organizations are exempt from paying taxes on their income, contributions to foreign organizations are not tax-deductible (in the absence of a special treaty providing otherwise with the country of the NGO’s origin).

The Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA)

This act requires any person or organization (U.S. or foreign) that is an “agent of a foreign principal” to register with the Justice Department and to disclose the foreign principal for which the agent works. Foreign principals can include governments, political parties, a person or organization outside the United States (except U.S. citizens), and any entity organized under the laws of a foreign country or having its principal place of business in a foreign country. FARA requires people acting as agents of foreign principals under certain circumstances to make periodic public disclosure of their relationship with the foreign principal, as well as activities, receipts, and disbursements in support of those activities.

Some governments have misinterpreted FARA as restricting the ability of civil society to register and operate. On the contrary, FARA does not impose a tax, nor does it set a cap on foreign funding that an organization can receive. FARA covers all "persons," including individuals, corporations, and associations. FARA also includes a number of exceptions, including for persons whose activities are in "furtherance of bona fide religious, scholastic, academic, or scientific pursuits or of the fine arts." FARA also exempts from registration other NGO activities, such as certain solicitations of funds for medical aid, or for "food and clothing to relieve human suffering."

NGO Relations on the Local and International Levels

Once an NGO has registered according to the requirements summarized earlier, the U.S. government does not interfere with how the NGO accomplishes its purposes. NGOs are free to recruit participants for their organizations as they wish, and need not provide notification to any government agency about its membership, activities, or outreach. Like other U.S. organizations and companies, U.S. NGOs must refrain from working with governments or individuals under U.S. sanctions, as well as with groups designated as foreign terrorist organizations, but otherwise, they are free to collaborate with foreign NGOs or foreign governments to achieve their purposes. There are no regulations that restrict U.S. NGOs from attending conferences abroad, finding donors overseas, or performing work internationally.

I am coming to this thread late but the last I read was that these folk are in our Embassy, not arrested at all. If BoBo was to turn them over, THEN we would have one heck of an issue but unless that happens, all we have is the typical islamoFascist government making demands we will ignor.

Oddly he didn't seem to have a problem with Libya! Could it be Egypt is a larger country? He revelled in the Arab Spring, spiking the ball on OBL, yet mysteriously silent on our citizens being held in Egypt. HOW ODD! sarcasm on

The problem is not with anyone thinking BoBo controls the Arab street (I am not sure he controls anything anywhere). The problem is with the folk who loudly proclaimed this Arab Spring a good thing before any of it played out and who now seem to be suffering from collective amnesia as to their predictions.

So we're just going to sit back and let them be paraded in front of a foreign country's (corrupt) court on ridiculous charges?

More than likely, there IS nothing being done, but MAYBE a little of Hillary whining, "pleeeeeeeze?? But, we're your buddies!! We supported the arab spring and your uprisings...oh never mind, they're just "American citizens," like that means anything to most of the world anymore but "pushovers." just do what you want with them."

Well they can't send Seal Team Six against the Egyptian government, we aren't dealing with a bunch of Somali pirates here, if we did something like that it could be construed as an act of war. Diplomacy will have to work here and threatening sanctions on Egypt. However, that could lead to more strains with a country that is already becoming increasingly distant.
