College students are now commonly using food stamps....now called SNAP. It was part of the stimulus, but it's rather hard for most to believe that college students.....anyone who can afford to go to college needs food stamps. It was a program designed for the POOR. So, who didn't struggle a bit while in college? But to have an administration GIVE you taxpayer money....now in the form of a debit which gets abused and used for other things? It's no wonder they turned out 60% to 27% for Obama. He buys them stuff. Just like the woman with the Obamaphone....several of them actually. It's all about getting free stuff. Problem is....it's NOT free; it's costing hardworking taxpayers a lot of money. These are NOT poor folks. But Obama bought them for $200/a month. And BTW, the debit cards are abused. It's not enough that we had to put our own kids through college; we now are forced to put Obama's constituents through as well. It's no wonder they came out in droves for him. Food stamp use has increased by millions under Obama...going from 42 million to 57 million since he took office. "For instance, Virginia (a swing state, btw) spent $447,000 in SNAP benefits for college students in January 2007 but by January of this year the total had risen to $2.9 million, according to the state’s Department of Social Services. The state spent $30 million in food assistance benefits to college students in 2011. “I never thought I would be on food stamps as a student, but with this economy I had no choice,” said student Courtney Davis, a second year student at Howard University majoring in maternal health and childcare. Although most people still use the term “food stamps” for the program that provides low-income families food payment assistance, the name was formally changed to SNAP, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Funds are now allocated electronically through an EBT, or Electronic Benefit Transfer, card instead of with paper vouchers that were used as cash. Davis, 18, applied for SNAP benefits last July after loosing some financial aid and parental support. At one point she was bouncing from one friend’s couch to another, moving from dorm to dorm until finally securing university housing. She says, under the circumstances, survival would have been nearly impossible without SNAP. “Even with the money I’m making from working 22 hours a week, I wouldn’t be able to afford tuition, living expenses and food,” she said. Davis is not alone. At Howard University, where tuition increased by 13 percent this year, more and more students are openly discussing their use of the SNAP benefits. “I didn’t realize so many students here were on food stamps, but it’s becoming a trend from what I’ve noticed,” said Darius Thomas, a junior who has been receiving $200 in benefits for over a year. http://video.foxbusiness.com/v/1437906514001/cash-strapped-co-eds-using-food-stamps/ http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs...6971aee-275f-11e2-b4f2-8320a9f00869_blog.html
Yes, by winning the 2012 election. Oh wait. No, you don't get it do you. People voted for Obama because he liked what he did. That's it. If people wanted X and the President gave them X, then wouldn't that make him more popular with the people?
We get it. 49% of the country liked Obama taking money from the OTHER 49% and giving it to them. The Free Corn Pigs. No mystery there. Get ready for the four hardest years of your life...
1. Shut up with the fear mongering. I have had to deal with this fear mongering since I came on. It's old now, espcially when your claims didn't turn out to be true. 2. That's not even how it works. Blanket statements, don't serve very well in this debate.
<<< MODERATOR EDIT: OFF TOPIC >>> The POINT of food stamps is to give a little help to people earning very little or no money. Food stamps are doing their JOB.
Some way out logic you have there. These type of threads are getting very boring. Could you not come up with something more intelligent? To claim that somehow all these students voted for Obama because they got food stamps is very disrespectful to them, you are classing them all as scroungers whose votes can be bought, you have made an assumption based on nothing more than your own bias.
Spoken like a 17 yr old school kid who's still living at home and supported by his parents..... who doesn't have to worry about mortgage/rent, utility bills, food on the table, gas and the cost for these necessities is sky-rocketing..... Where do you get your nerve?
You poor baby..... you don't have to 'deal' w/anything. If you don't like the posts, don't read them! See how easy that would be?
No. Food stamps aren't used for healthy food needs. Halloween candy, cash for beer/cigarettes, 90% high fructose corn syrup foods. It is a highly unregulated "benefit". It does a disservice.
:lroll: Really? Do you have some "source" for this inside information? could it be the usual Right Wing source, i.e. "I was at Kmart and this woman bought Dr. Pepper with her food stamps", astupid story since no one gives out food stamps any more, its just an ATM card. It odd because the 90 yo lady upstairs from me, the disabled guy in another apartment , the three disabled people I help with their day to day lives, and the two able bodied but long-term unemployed 60 yo people ALL shop carefully and buy nutritious food each month and try to stretch it out. I can't decide, are the people who HATE people who need help just self-centered? Or do they simply enjoy seeing people suffering? I ask this because the WHOLE food stamp program costs less that the cash that disappeared in Iraq over the course of a year, or the amount we hand out each year to monster-million dollar farm corporations subsidize corn growing, or the amount we give to dairy farmers to INCREASE the price of milk at the store!
He bought a bunch of votes with the auto bailout, and welfare too! His approval rating doesn't even need to be high, people can be upset with his foreign policy, etc....they probably consider him a necessary evil to get their free checks! Liberals have done a nice job in making people believe they are ALL corrupt, so you might as well vote in the candidate that give them free stuff. We are truely screwed!!
I am willing to bet the bank that there are plenty of conservatives/repubs who are on welfare and who also receive food stamps. One thing I have learned about conservatives/repubs, they talk tough until their ass is unemployed or some type of disaster strikes.

Yes. Its called being in line in any Walmart any day, any time, and observing the people around you, and how they choose to pay. Do you not get out much? Its everywhere. The (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*) in front of me during my recent to trip to Hawaii, used his to pull out CASH, and then proceeded to buy cigarettes, in the same line! Although the law says they can't do this. The program incentivizes irresponsible behavior. Yes it helps people who need it, but its also theft.
You are somewhat correct! The Republican Party needs to get rid of the useless RINO's that have nearly ruined it for 30 years and become a common-sense, responsible political party of Conservative economic policy. RINO's should create their own standing-in-their-own-urine kind of "go-along, get-along" appeasement party, located generally in the "middle" where they can sing "Kumbaya" with every crudball that rolls onto the political stage, but do less harm.
How is it unbelievable that college students would need food stamps? Many college students rely completely on loans, grants and scholarships to pay for college. And many do not have time to get a job if you're in one of the more time demanding majors such as an engineering major. College gets more expensive every year. We should be doing all we can to lessen the burden for students. Because if we lose ground on college educated adults we lose the one thing we have more than any other country. We lose the one thing keeping us ahead economically. Making it harder to afford college is beyond stupid.
Whoever did that is an idiot. Way to waste your entire month's budget on a week's worth of food. They didn't cost the government any more money. They just made their situation more desperate for 3/4 weeks of the month.
