If there is no God, then why should I not murder if I can get away with it?

LOL. I'm not the one wanting to murder someone because I don't like something(s) they're doing and think what they're doing is wrong(judging).

Murder is wrong. Simple as that.

    "I could, but I don't because it's wrong."

    "I could, but I don't because I'll be punished."

Which is the more moral statement? An atheist doesn't need a whip at his/her back in order to do the right thing.

How can you know if something is right? Ask yourself if you'd accept being on the receiving end of it.

There might be. Socrates/Plato make a pretty good argument for it in Book I of The Republic.

Then why is it wrong for Black Rook to murder his neighbor???

    *Enter subjective atheist opinion here.*

But this is just your PERSONAL OPINION!!!! You're not really making a case for why Black Rook should or should not murder his neighbor.

You're not explaining why it's good or evil to murder. You're AVOIDING the point of the thread, like a typical atheist COWARD.

    Let me add to this:

My drug dealer, child pornographer neighbor, who sells little children into sex slavery, and the law doesn't touch him.

But if I were to murder him, think of all the good I would do?

And the local district attorney has assured me that he would not investigate too closely if this neighbor of mine were to "disappear."

So tell me, what's stopping me from murdering my neighbor.

I don't believe in God, heaven or hell, so there are no eternal consequences.

    What's to stop me?

How do you know when somebody is doing something wrong?????/?

You just admitted that you judge people. How do you know your judgment is valid or fair????

    - - - Updated - - -

    This is your personal OPINION........

If you are being attacked by a mugger on the street, and he pulls out a gun, and you have a concealed weapon with your concealed weapon permit, and you kill your attacker, then is it wrong?

    Is self defense wrong?????

OK, fine, you're not going for my hypothetical.

    Here's another.

My neighbor is my best friend.

He is old, sick and in a lot of pain.

But the doctors say he may live for years.

He wants to die, but doesn't have the nerve to kill himself.

He asks me to put a pillow over his head and put him out of his misery.

I know that the police will not prosecute me for the death of this very old man, because they will assume he died of natural causes.

And there is no God, heaven, or hell.

What is to stop me from killing my neighbor?

Atheism is not a philosophy, it is simply the lack of belief in gods. An atheist could be a conservative, a fascist, an existentialist, a nihilist, or a subscriber to any other philosophy imaginable (except theism, obviously).

Love, empathy, kindness, respect, and altruism can all keep an atheist (or anyone, for that matter) from being wanton with people's lives.

    - - - Updated - - -

No, I don't. I don't see how that is relevant, though. People still have preferences, desires, hopes, and dreams, and I don't see any reason for abandoning a code of ethics that takes those things into consideration. Atheism, and even nihilism, does not entail sociopathy.

Kantian consistency is the idea that we engage in certain moral actions on the basis that if everyone acted like we do, our actions should be such that it won't lead to harming ourselves. It's a bit selfish, rather than altruistic, but that's where utilitarianism (maximizing pleasure while minimizing suffering) takes up some of the slack. Kantian consistency is, essentially, the Golden Rule, but it explains the consequences of not following it.

So if Blackrook has a neighbor who is medically ill, and asks Blackrook to put him out of his misery and suffering, by killing him, then you're saying we should murder people out of love, empathy and kindness?

So murder is morally acceptable if the person dying is asking to die???

And this is your personal opinion, not your objective morality?

I have no problem with assisted suicide for the terminally ill / suffering, although I wouldn't support such an illegal way of going about it. I'd be in favor of legal euthanasia.

It's not murder in that case, but an act of mercy.

    - - - Updated - - -

Please provide evidence for this assertion (keep in mind that you'll have to show EVERY atheist, without exception, is a sociopath to establish that atheism entails sociopathy).

There is no such thing as objective morality. It is logically impossible.

OK, well now I've nailed you.

You won't let me murder my drug dealing child pornographer neighbor who beats children and sells them into sex slavery, but you will let me murder a harmless old man.

And you think that's ok because he asked me to.

So now I have found the difference between those of us who believe in God and those who don't.

Sometimes, people who don't believe in God will allow for murder.

And once you open that door, well, there you have it.

Maybe you can explain why it is good to murder. Then we'll know where your coming from.
But it is not good to murder because you take a life without knowing whether it was justified or not. Except in your mind.
Why not murder your neighbor simply because he snores to loud and you can hear him on a warm summer night?

It's murder AND it's an act of mercy. Both.

But you are culpable of murder just the same, despite your motives, and you would be convicted of murder.

And in the eyes of God, also, you would have committed the sin of murder.

But you don't believe that, so you will allow this murder.

So there is a difference between you and me.

    A big difference.

No, you haven't. You've set a sophistic trap, but you haven't gotten me in any philosophical sense.

This is a fallacious appeal to emotion. The relevant distinction here is not the character of the men being killed, but the motivations of the killers. The first case is extrajudicial execution, an act of violence that I find abhorrent and detrimental to society, and the second case is assisted suicide, an act of mercy that I find beneficial to the person being killed and society.

    Well done!

And notice, that the atheists justify murdering other people "out of kindness and love". So I guess if you love somebody, then you can kill them???

And it expands from there, because once you have allowed mercy killing, mercy gets pretty big and covers a lot of people.

I would never commit such an act unless it was specifically legalized AND the person, being of sound mind, wished it to happen. Why are you personally attacking me and accusing me of being capable of murder? I hate murder! I'm a pacifist who abhors all forms of violence.

Well, one is a single, 6-letter word, and the other is 11 letters making up two words. I don't know of a definition of "murder" that includes "self defense." Do you disagree?

A man is coming to murder you and your family. And he's devoted his life purpose to doing so.

Isn't murdering this man a good thing? Isn't it good to protect your family?

OR....isn't murder wrong for all? If murder is wrong for all, then why and how? Is it your PERSONAL, subjective opinion, or an objective moral fact? And if it is an objective moral fact, then where is it originating and sourced from? What is responsible for an objective morality?

For TRUE CHRISTIANS, the answer is very easy. Objective morality comes from ABSOLUTE GOODNESS. And what is perfectly GOOD?????

You know HIS NAME. You know HIS WORD. You KNOW the answer!

If I killed my neighbor who was selling drugs and selling children into sex slavery, and the law did not stop him, would I not be doing society a big favor? Would I not be saving children from a fate worse than death?

Why do you sanction murder that benefits one man but not the murder of the man that benefits so many?
