The Longshoremen leave the AFL-CIO over ObamaTax,

    http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Govern...bamacare-40-000-Longshoremen-Quit-the-AFL-CIO

    quote:
“In what is being reported as a surprise move, the 40,000 members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) announced that they have formally ended their association with the AFL-CIO, one of the nation's largest private sector unions. The Longshoremen citied Obamacare and immigration reform as two important causes of their disaffiliation.”

“…upset with the AFL-CIO for going along with Obama on the confiscatory tax on their "Cadillac" healthcare plan.”

    Taxcutter notes:
In the video, Rich Trumka betrays the fact he is clueless.

Unions always go where the money/benefits/security is.................always. When the LSM jump Obama's sinking rat infested ship there's a reason. That's 40K who won't be voting LIB in 014. There really is a God.

They are small when you compare them to the SEIU, Teamsters, CWA, etc.

Smart move! Fragmenting the labor union movement just when it is under pressure and attack from all sides is a sure winning strategy for the unions in question! How sarcastic to I have to be to point out how boneheaded this move is?

They basically run the ports, they are actually quite a powerful union, regardless of their numbers...

Granted, they have a lot of power; in fact they can actually shut down the Ports if they so choose. That gives them phenomenal bargaining power at the table. :)

I agree. But the next LIB presidential candidate is going to be a lot more centrist than Obama. The days of standing in front of a bunch of 'OJ jurors' and putting on a S. Baptist drawl to get their vote is over. Obama never did SFA to improve the life of Blacks. Giving them all free 'cells' didn't cut it.
The unions are not so dumb anymore. Their membership numbers are falling into the 'endangered species' list. In a decade no one will even know how to spell 'union'.......and the membership knows this fact, as do the 'leaders' who drive new Escalades and live in million dollar mansions and travel, with their families, to 'somewhere nice' a few times a year but their income tax returns show they only make 40K a year. Nope, the unions are going to cash in with the party that has the power next time, as usual, and that party will be the GOP.

Back in the 60s there were a half million longshoremen on the East Coast alone.

Containerized shipping knocked 90% of the labor out of loading and unloading ships. The survivors are mostly crane operators and are so well paid (six figures) they have no need to strike. Part of their compensation is really good health insurance.

Now ObamaTax will tax that insurance big time so moochers can have free health care.

    A few inaccuracies:

Who says Obama is a "LIB"? FDR may have been our last "LIB" president. Obama is a corporate tool.

Your free cell gripe is really about a program by the W.Bush administration, not Obama.

Why would unions have anything to do with the GOP? They realize that the GOP is dedicated to the banning of all unions, and every other thing that helps working people. The flap with the AFL-CIO is that the leadership makes so much money that they forgot what they are here for.

Top union leadership is just like congress - it needs a good purge.

Not quite. Longshoremen are about the highest paid union today and they will vote any way required to keep THEIRS. They will vote Dem in the main. The union supports single payer.

One wonders why the United Mine Workers stay on the Dem plantation when the EPA is trying their best to kill UMW jobs.

I wonder why any union supports the Democratic party. The Democrats and Republicans are two branches of the same corporate party. And both believe the only use for working people is cannon fodder and votes, come election time.

Democrats may pander to unions. But they don't really do anything for unions.

Reap what you sow brothers. Chickens coming home to roost. Trumka isn't happy either. I would love it if they got what they wanted and voted for, but I'm sure they will get some sort of exemption while the other Cadillac plans won't. My brother voted for Obama twice and I'm hoping his Cadillac plan gets taxed at that 40%.

The Longshoremens' union is going the way of the Buggy-whip makers union. Subscriptions are low due to their reduced membership, and other unions are poaching theirmembers in spite of agreements with the AFL/CIO against this. The AFL/CIO isn't enforcing their own rules so the Longshoremen are taking their ball and playing alone. The word Obamacare appears once on page three of the withdrawal letter's litany of complaints.

They stay with the Democrats because they know that the GOP would kill OSHA and a bunch of miners along with it.

How about we count you as clueless instead?
Obama Care and amnesty for millions was cited as a reason of dissatisfaction.

The easiest way the break the back of any union is for the company to stop collecting union dues out of the employees paychecks for the Unions. It's called dues checkoff and it's a bargaining chip because there is no law that says they have to and the get to charge for doing it. Or they can keep raising the price to collect it with every contract calling for a raise. let the union thugs chase the members around to collect the money after they get it in their hands. The first guy with a bogus grievance that gets turned down will get the ball rolling by refusing to pay dues and telling fellow members why.

I don't know why a group of workers with some of the best insurance in the country would push for single payer, its like they are asking for worse coverage.... ohh well I guess it doesn't take brains to unload a ship.
