The GOP hates the 17th Amendment, which calls for direct popular elections of Senators.

They hate it, cause the Senate is ruled by Democrats and has been for the great majority of the last 60 years.

Someone already started a thread on this topic, so this thread should be closed as a dupe.

The Founding Fathers gave the states a say in how the federal government was run, which was taken away with passage of the 17th amendment. Now the states are at the mercy of the federal government, and have no way to defend themselves from overreaching federal regulations and unfunded federal mandates.

Yes, and no. Who rules the Senate is secondary. The problem is, universally speaking, democracy always results in tyranny. The more stupid people you have directly voting on government, the more stupid government becomes.

It's ironic, because it's generally the left, more than anyone who complains about bad politicians in office, politicians that are in it for themselves, and not anyone else, that are corrupt and bought and paid for by companies.

Well.... You really don't see how direct election of politicians, is linked to all these problems?

I mean Ted Kennedy murdered a girl, and the public voted him back into office time after time after time. Bill Clinton raped, obstructed justice, witness tampered, and many more things, and then went on TV with his 1996 testimony, everyone KNEW he was lying through his teeth the entire time.... and yet the public voted him back in office.

You people talk about politicians violating the law, and yet when they do, you support them completely. Which is exactly what the Founding Fathers understood stupid people would do. If someone says what you want to hear, you'll vote them in no matter what kind of scum sucking bottom feeder they happen to be.

And by the way, the same is generally true of some right-wing people as well, but the left is particularly bad on this issue.

But this is why we're against the 17th amendment. It will eventually lead to our destruction as a country, and the idiotic left is too stupid to see they are killing themselves.

This recent election is also a perfect example. Obama basically accomplished nothing good in his first 4 years. Before about 2011, I can remember listening to leftists complain bitterly about how little Obama had done, he didn't do what he said he would do, he didn't fix the economy, he didn't fix health care, he gave even more money to rich fat cats than even Bush did.... and yet... the moment that Romney got the nomination, it was like a twilight zone moment.....

All the people that were thinking and considered what Obama's real record was, suddenly morphed into Obama-Bots again, and magically Obama accomplished everything! The Economy is perfect and amazing! He masterfully fixed the world, and made all our hope and change happen in pristine perfection!

Why? Because we have Democracy now, and stupid people vote. The public is so easily manipulated, it's pathetic. But the Founding Fathers knew that, which is why we were not supposed to have public elections. We've completely removed all the safe guards that the people who built this country put in place.... and now we have a bunch of whiny people, who can't figure out why our government is all screwed up.

Let me ask you something.... Just consider this for a second....

Would US Federal Senators need to be milking and giving favors to big corporations, so they can build up hundreds of thousands in campaign funds...... *IF* the Senators were appointed by State Legislators as it was originally designed?

the States were subject to corporate bribery and control, which fed into their selection of Senators.

that's why we have the 17th Amendments.

i won't pay any damn taxes unless I have a say in who are the men who write the tax laws that affect me.

They also said slavery was ok.....Clearly they did not get everything right. If they had, there would not be a single amendment.
