Ted Cruz Calls Birth Control 'Abortifacients'

By Laura Bassett | Huffington Post | 10/11/2013 11:07 am EDT
    Excerpts”

“Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Friday repeated the misguided conservative talking point that the birth control coverage rule included in Obamacare forces employers to cover abortion-inducing pills.

Cruz told the crowd at the 2013 Values Voter Summit that the Obama administration is forcing Christian-owned businesses like Hobby Lobby to provide "abortifacients" or pay millions of dollars in fees. Hobby Lobby is one of several religious-owned businesses currently suing the administration over its requirement that most employers include contraception coverage in their health insurance plans.

The Affordable Care Act requires most employers to cover birth control, including emergency contraception - also known as the morning-after pill or Plan B - in their health insurance plans. But employers are not required to cover RU-486, an abortion-inducing medication that is sometimes confused with emergency contraception.

Many conservatives, including former presidential candidates Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum, have claimed that emergency contraception causes abortions by preventing a fertilized egg from implanting into the uterus. They argue that a fertilized egg is essentially a person, the same logic that is used to lobby for fetal personhood laws.

But scientists and medical experts have debunked the claim that the morning-after pill causes abortions. The New York Times wrote in June 2012 that "the politically charged debate over morning-after pills and abortion...is probably rooted in outdated or incorrect scientific guesses about how the pills work."

Emergency contraception works before pregnancy begins by delaying or inhibiting ovulation or thickening cervical mucus so sperm have trouble swimming.

Appeals courts have handed down conflicting decisions as to whether for-profit companies like Hobby Lobby should be able to refuse to cover birth control in their health plans, and the Supreme Court is currently deciding whether to take on the case next year.”

    .......

IMO: This is yet another attack against all females in America in a grotesque display of ignorance of our Constitution and the right of privacy of women in decisions greatly affecting their health and quality of life that should not be questioned by radical, fanatical legislators that have had no training or knowledge of what women need, want, and expect on the ordinary events in their private lives.

Legislators are supposed to run the government, not women’s lives and our right to privacy to make our own decisions should not be denied by some flaky, belching, old legislators that use all the old outdated methods to denigrate women into submission with their radical and bizarre beliefs that are politically motivated.

In a Democacy, the laws of the land are to be respected as part of our Constitution, not ignored because they conflict with our political agendas and insidiously attacked by misrepresentation of what our mighty Constitution actually says for political profit.

    .....

    1) Fellow republicans hate Cruz too...he is headed for 'under the bus' strategy because he tried to pull a fast one on his cronies in the Senate. BWHAHAHA!!!

    2) Wrong; any presidential aspirations he had have been evaporated in the intense hatred moderate republicans now have for him for playing both sides of the fence for his own political motivations.

Was anyone really expecting Cruz to be accurate and honest? Probably about as much as I expect his fans to call him on it.

Clearly the guy is either completely clueless or he is intentionally invoking dishonest rhetoric. I simply find it amazing that no one can seemingly take the ACA to task on what it actually contains, and instead has to make up (*)(*)(*)(*) like Cruz did.

Cruz didn't even pronounce the word correctly. He said "abortiFIcients." It's "abortiFAcients." If someone insists on controlling my body, I demand that they at least know how to pronounce words. It would also be nice if they had some rudimentary knowledge about female biology, but that seems to be in short supply in the Tea Party.

ETA -- Oops. That would be science. So yeah, that's a non-starter.

I guess you forgot that Catholics don't want to pay for birth control, whether or not its an abortifacient. So even if you're right, you're wrong.

Do we need to show you the statistics again that Catholic women in America use birth control at the same rate as non-Catholic women and that Catholics in America on average support birth control at nearly the same rate as non-Catholics?

Not every Catholic is mindlessly dogmatic.

So you're saying because SOME Catholics don't care about paying for birth control, ALL Catholics should be forced to pay for birth control.

I don't believe that we should have an interventionist military. Being forced to pay for that must mean that Republicans have tyrannical regimes right?

    MOD EDIT>>>FLAME BAIT<<<
Catholic women use birth control as much (or more) than any other woman!
The time when a family with 4 or more kids was the subject of the joke ("how do you call a family with many kids. . . . Catholics!) is long gone. . .THANK GOD!
By the way. . .what tells you that birth control pills was not "God's gift to women?"

    - - - Updated - - -

Which obviously means that, 73% DOESN't accept the Church teaching on contraception. . .and I would venture to guess that among the 27% who "accept completely" the Church teaching, 90% are either below or over procreation age!

Nice try blaming Republicans, but Democrats are in control of the White House and the Senate and the military is as big as ever, and we now have even more wars than when Bush was President.

I'm just trying to figure out the limits of the ridiculous rhetoric you use. Apparently only democrats can be tyrants to you while Republicans always get a pass.

So, are you saying he did not make that claim, or are you saying he is right and the scientists are wrong? Or are you just blathering to be blathering?

I actually believe I was agreeing with your post on that one. . .saying that it was "blown out of proportion" or something like that.
And, the comment that was "moderated" (the one you posted above) was addressed to Blackrook, and why would I overrule the decision of a mod to edit some of my comment? The bulk of what I met to say remains. . .I'm sure you can figure it out!
