Gloria Steinem Speaks Out About Miley Cyrus, Ends The Debate Forever

“It's official. Gloria Steinem has weighed in on Miley Cyrus-gate, so we can all go home and stop talking about it forever.

Last week, during the Women's Media Awards, Steinem was asked by Yahoo's Omg! Insider whether she thought Cyrus' risque VMAs performance and "Wrecking Ball" video were setting the feminist movement back. The icon and activist answered with a resounding "I don't think so."

She expanded on that opinion, saying:
“I wish we didn’t have to be nude to be noticed ... But given the game as it exists, women make decisions. For instance, the Miss America contest is in all of its states ... the single greatest source of scholarship money for women in the United States. If a contest based only on appearance was the single greatest source of scholarship money for men, we would be saying, "This is why China wins." You know? It’s ridiculous. But that’s the way the culture is. I think that we need to change the culture, not blame the people that are playing the only game that exists.”

We're glad that Steinem sees the complex context of Cyrus' manufactured sexuality, and didn't resort to shaming the 20-year-old pop star. But we're even more glad to see Steinem's comment as the last word on the matter.”

IMO: Steinem has it about right where Miley Cyrus is merely echoing the morals of the young today after viewing the culture of the female in America. If anyoe doesn’t like it, they don’t have to pay to see her perform, but she is just regurgitating the moral element of today’s young society, and it is certainly her right to express that in her act.

Women today are equals to men whether men like it or not, and women see the frailty of men in their inability to finally grow up to be responsible citizens, so we shouldn’t be so quick to castigate young women as they seek their rightful place in society whether it be on the stage, in the business office, and in the home.

The world is wide open to women today, as it should have been eons ago, but men needed to be taken care of, so kept women away from the voting polls, birth control pills, and were safely barricaded inside their homes having babies and under male control.

Women are now free to live their own lives, own careers, and free to compete with men in the marketplace. The real question is: Are men ready for this drastic step in their lives?

 

If Miley didnt already look used up, it might be more acceptable. Turning stomachs is never in Vogue.

The world is not wide open to women these days... unless one is so shallow to think Hollywood is the whole world.

2) "turning stomachs"?? Women can sometimes be their own worst enemies when they venture archaic opinions out of ignorance, jealousy, and/or abeyance to the false male doctrine of supremacy.

3) I am thinking merely of women's choices today: they can be soldiers, doctors, CEO's, and have careers that satisfy them as much as being married (or not) and dropping broods of babies. IOW: the world is wide open to them to decide what they wish to do, be, and not society deciding for them.

Not sure why it's a big deal. Manufactured morals of the type that are offended by the human form are just about as backwards as it can get.

What's the big deal about someone nude? You enter the world that way after all. Granted, there are some people who should wear cloths to avoid breaking mirrors (I probably fall into that category) but I really don't care one way or the other.

Our society manufactures these situations by being intolerant and uncompromising about new ideas, or styles. Heck look at the Marajuana debate, it's turning out that the weed has many medicinal properties that no one was allowed to research because the FDA under all administrations of the last 40 or so years prohibited it. Why? The so called Moral Majority that thought it knew best.

That is exactly what Steinem was saying! That it is society that wants to objectify the female thru nudity, so we shouldn't shame Miley Cyrus for her stage performances where she is blatantly performing to what the male audience wants to see. I rather think that Cyrus is into shocking the staid old white republican bigots that have a stereotypical predisposition toward deciding for everyone what is acceptable, shocking, audacious, or slutty. Lady Gaga started the whole new scenario in female performances.

The only reason Miley Cyrus got any attention for her antics is because she used to be one of the virgin pure Disney pop princesses, and there are few things people in this country love more than a fall from grace. She is hardly the first entertainer to engage in such behavior on stage, but it's hardly noteworthy when Madonna or Lady Gaga does it.
