While all this chastising of Russia goes on like a choir of the West, I have been wondering
Where oh where could France be?
The French have been traditional friends of the Russians, except the Napoleonic episode.
And Russians I know speak glowingly of the French and can't understand why Americans generally diss their one time ally against the fascist, as Russians say.

    While Frau Merkle cowers,
    The French have spoken !

    http://news.yahoo.com/us-voices-concerns-sale-french-warships-russia-181201334.html

US voices 'concerns' at sale of French warships to Russia

Washington (AFP) - US officials voiced concern Thursday at the sale of French warships to Moscow as they mulled tougher sanctions on Russia for the political upheaval triggered by the Ukraine crisis.

The first of two Mistral warships is not due to be delivered to Russia until later this year, and France has so far resisted pressure to suspend the controversial $1.2 billion contract.

The Mistral is an advanced helicopter assault ship and France's 2011 agreement to sell them to Russia already triggered protests from the United States and other NATO allies.

<sigh> Finally, after all this time, The French are behaving like The French.
The Spirit of Charles de Gaulle must be so very pleased right now.

"The French have been traditional friends of the Russians, except the Napoleonic episode." Have you forgotten NATO and what it meant? Russia's traditional friend in western Europe was Germany, until WW2. Remember that Catherine the Great was a German princess, and western Russia was heavily populated by German Jews.

I remember Hitler and Stalin were great pals - when they were in the process of dividing Poland---and that Stalin's European and American KGB/GRU agents promoted a noisy "anti-war" agenda--until Hitler decided to attack his ideological half-brother.....

To arms ! To arms !! Death to the Thousand Year Reich !!

C'mon America : Open a Second Front to relieve the pressure on our gallant ally !!

We appreciate France's help during the Revolution, even though it had it's own selfish reasons for sticking it to the British.

That having been said, we saved France's ass during WWII, so we're even. :)

    Viva les États-Unis! :salute: :flagus:

I think it's more like a give and take thing.

France helped us win the Revolution.

We helped liberate France from the Nazies.

The truth of the matter is that France and America have a lot in common, but it's mostly with regard to being both independent-minded and stubborn.

We each like to go our own way about things. When it is good or bad is dependent on your perspective.

    You did get it! 100%.

The french do not like that much the idea that others tell them what to do. France will never be the poodle for the US, unlike... we both know your poodle...

But I do think that is in the end of the day the better way:

France and the USA have NEVER been in war with each other. Fact.

    The poodle was...

    most others where...not so France.

Your statue of freedom is....freedom is a value what counts! Also the freedom to disagree.

When I see americans in France, they are mainly really wellcomed. All that stupit bashing of the Iraqi war veto was just advertisement for the american french tourism industry.

But what a lot of americans do not know: American help in WW2 finally did cause that germans and french did get not just along with eachother. they did become really close allies.

2014, war between Germany and France is as possible as between New Yorkers and people from New Jersey. No way.

Yeah, I've never been to France, but I hope to visit some day.

I've heard that Paris is very different from the rest of the country. Most of the stereotypes that Americans have of the French supposedly only apply to Paris for the most part.

From what I hear, the French outside of Paris are much friendlier.

In a way, you could sort of say the same about New York City vs. the rest of America. New Yorkers are known for being rude, whereas Americans in a lot of other cities are more polite and friendly.

Wonderful! Did you forget Freedom Fries during Iraq war? It was hilarious, all America was trumpeting war over WMD, which have never been found. French were right.

Forget Paris. Aggressive hasty people. I cannot stand them. My mother is from the countryside in the mountains between Spain and France, close to the Mediterrenian Sea (mountains near Perpignan).

My oncle does have a small hotel in a village over there. Once I did meet two americans at the airport when I was a student in Paris. I adviced them to leave Paris after a day to Perpignan - what they did. I called my fat oncle who looks and behaves like a teddy bear. He never has seen these american students before, but after I called him, he did wellcome them with music (no joke) and an american flag at the train station.

I think they did stay 5 weeks there.

That made me for return beeing able to travel to ...guess: NYC! For free...and I did like New Yorkers who where very kind to me. Years later my neighbor where I did live in germany in Berlin (my fathers city) became a very close friend to me. He is from that lake area in the USA. Last year he went back with his whole family to the states.

I will after all that time visit the USA once more. I will see these lakes.

My american very good friend did say (he served for the marines and is a real american patriot, so forgive that guy) "if you once did eat french well made cheese, you NEVER EVER will eben try american anymore.

That about "stinky" cheese. About food, we do not like jokes in France. Our food is the best in the world - I hardly respect italian cheese and whine, but after that...no way.

Let americans win wars, about food, no jokes pls.

    Take care

Bobov :nana: (Moi made me do it), The Russian royal family was close to the Prussians and the Germans in general, after all where would else could they go to find royal princess' to marry, but they had a special relationship with France. Until Tsar Nicholas II French was still spoken in the Russian court. I would say in blood they were closer to the Germans, but culturally they were closer to France.

A bit off topic but, the reason French was not used by Nicky 2 is the only common language between
Nicky and his German was, English.
Yes, the language of the last Russian Royals was English.

As for France and NATO. My father aimee La France ! I grew up with French this and French that.
De Gaulle was upset that America, under NATO was flying spying missions over French soil.
    And America would not stop.

BTW through the fifties when America and the West would not sell weapons to Israel, the French did.
Czechoslovakia was the only other nation to do so in the fifties.

I look forward to The French setting their uniquely French standard on Putin relations to the annoyance of The West.
Too bad Merkle can't grow a pair.

RT is reporting NATO exercises in Poland, Romania and the Three Little Baltics.
No French were mentioned. A Belgium unit was.

I hardly can imagine one society beeing so self critical as the american one: Mississipi Burning that american masterpeace...

I strongly disagree. American society, especially where I did notice it in NYC, is a great example of democracy and I do trust in them.

I disliked George Bush's Iraq invasion and his reaction on critics to that and his behaviour towards his own minister of foreign affaires, but I think a lot of americans did share that opinion.

Russia does not have at all such self critical tradition. That is exactly what is missing there. Beeing homophobic, nationalistic, aggressive towards its neighbors is NOT what I do expect coming out of a modern society.

You do live in the USA. If you knew what most europeans do think about russians in uniforms...if you knew...you would really be surprised...and change some ideas.

In 1994 in Berlin, the allies had to leave the city. Americans as french as britains where celebrated one day and we said "bye bye" with positive memories.

The population of Berlin extremily refused to do so with russians. Russians where victims of german aggression in WW2, defenetely truth. But they where also aggressors in the exact same war in a way what is not so known nowdays in the USA:

    POLAND 1939
    BALTIC 1940
    Finland 1940
    Germany / Königsberg 1945

Raping women all over Europe (also polish, tchechs, roumainian, jewish - they first liberated jewish women, than they often raped them...really nice behaviour! ect ect ect), raping german kids ! My aunt was 12 and raped by russian soldiers!

My best friend here in Berlin is polish. His stories about russians...

No. you americans are really not well informed about european history. German crimes are known and that is just needed. But unlike germans, russians never did learn in their schools about russian crimes...THAT is the tragic. They are innocent by not informed!

But I am european. Believe me. Russia has a lot to tell and defenetely to hold on in Ukraine.

Yes. In Ukraine you DO find Swoboda and Nazis, I am aware of that. So you do in France (Front National) in Britain UKIP / National Party, in Greece, in Croatia, in Turkey (BOZKURT), in the USA (Klukluxclan) ect ect...but does that give rights to invade?

    I guess not.

Russia does use that (about 5 - 10% of ukrainians do vote that scum) to conquer foreign territory as Crimea...

    as eastern Ukraine...

    ...as Poland tomorrow?

    ...as the Baltics next day?

...you know: once a russian asked me (with innocense in his voice): "do you live in the russian part of Germany?"

He ment former East Germany I guess. But that does show up exactly the way these brain washed nationalistic russians think nowdays.

And guess what: that way of thinking does make a former pacifist as me changing into a guy what ask Germany to be armed with nukes to be protected.

I am soooo glad France does have some. 5 years ago, I wanted to get rid of them...

Russia changes a lot. Not to the better here in Europe, not to the better...

This is wonderful to remember. Why they do not want to introduce sanctions against junta in Kiev? That illegal government is using tanks with live ammunition against people in eastern provinces of Ukraine and threaten them with "abyss".

This is a very positive sign. History is remembered and it matters.

The French are ruthless when it comes to financial gain.

4 years ago a big chunk of our bailout money* came from French banks , under the condition that we will purchase French missiles. Nobody knew about that until we read the complaints in Turkish newspapers , apparently Greece can not feed its people but it was enough firepower to turn Istanbul into ashes.
I wouldn't be surprised if the French sell nukes to Iran or North Korea, they are behind Israeli nuclear program and they also constructed military infrastructure for Saddam.

*The Germans were polite enough to force us buy submarines with their contribution of bailout money.

There is no Junta in Kiew. The only Junta I can see is around Putin.

In Kiew the ukrainian People did chose freedom and the west; Putin feels rejected and asnwers with russian Fascists called "pro-russians" h sends to Ukraine..

Watch and listen the real news and you will understand. Not that russian propaganda stuff.

Kiew needs elections, but I cannot see any Junta there. Klitschko would be the best president...unfortunately he wont candidate.

I heard a few weeks ago from a German poster that there was a lot of support for Russia in Germany. Are you currently living there? How do you perceive the feeling.
