Nearly eight in 10 young adults favor gay marriage by Justin McCarthy WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Americans' support for the law recognizing same-sex marriages as legally valid has increased yet again, now at 55%. Marriage equality advocates have had a string of legal successes over the past year, most recently this week in Pennsylvania and Oregon where federal judges struck down bans on gay marriage. Two successive Gallup polls in 2012 saw support climb from 53% to 54%, indicating a steady but slight growth in acceptance of gay marriages over the past year after a more rapid increase between 2009 and 2011. In the latest May 8-11 poll, there is further evidence that support for gay marriage has solidified above the majority level. This comes on the heels of gay marriage proponents' 14th legal victory in a row. http://www.gallup.com/poll/169640/sex-marriage-support-reaches-new-high.aspx Now of course comes the bemoaning and rendering garments and gnashing of teeth and calls of "America is lost!" and "God will punish us" and then "Who cares?" and "Of course, they've been in'doc'ternated by the Lib'rul Media". But the wailing and excuses don't matter. Those antipathetic to gay rights are in the MINORITY and that's not going to change...in fact, it is likely to get even worse for them. And politically....I foresee the Republican Party dropping ALL references to "marriage" from their 2016 Party Platform...straight or gay.....the RNC will see no future in such discussions....or electoral advantage.
Remember, of those 8 out of 10 young people, at least 43% will wake up one morning and suddenly hate gay people once they get to about 35. Because that's the only thing that's going to line up the Republican Party's social stances. I have a friend that's about my age, 25, a Fox News junkie, rants and raves about Obama, and got in trouble with a group of us because she called a friend a freeloader for being on food stamps. She supports my right to get married. A GWB lover is 100% in support of gay marriage. Why? Because she grew up with us. Gay kids were in her classes. Gay kids were falling in love and getting their hearts broken right next to her in school, in her daily life, in everything she did. And now she finds discrimination against us as heinous as she does with other groups. The numbers are absolutely dismal for the wrong-side-of-history crew. I know that I don't want to be remembered with the villains of history, the hinderers of progress, but unfortunately the same cannot be said of those with no foresight.
Mentioning Dubya brings up a point where you can say the Religious Right and Homophobes "really started to lose". When they said NOTHING against Dick Cheney when he was picked as Veep in 2000....out of partisan political reasons...in fact, praised him. YET...his daugther Mary was an open lesbian who later married her girlfriend. Same folks who scream "perversion!!!!!" and "Homer'sekuality is caused by no Christian values at home".....never once criticized Dick or Lynne Cheney or even their daughter. At that point, they were shown for hypocrites.
It isn't so much people are buying into the gay rights myth as it is that people are just tired of the whining.
I'm sure the last segregationist said that too. "It's not so much people believe in rights for Negroes...they're just tired of the complaining!"
Isn't time to stop polluting the political scene with sensationalist nonsense ? If it not in your butt why care ?
Social Conservatives will eventualy see even the Republican Party abandon them.....so, out of sheer cynical desire to remain political relevant? They'll stop talking about gay marriage entirely.
At some point opponents of gay rights will say something like "Who CARES? It was never a big issue to me"....in contradiction to YEARS of posts or comments which showed they DID care and it WAS a big deal to them.
It's the same thing as getting people to say they marched for segregation to continue, or admit that an ancestor fought for the Nazis. If you were to listen to people, the Confederate side of the Civil War was empty. It was just a couple rednecks with some guns and too much time on their hands. Basically a really bloody episode of Duck Dynasty.
Or the Republican Party Revisionist History....where it was "conservative Southerners" (who are now Republicans) who fought FOR civil rights in the 50s and 60s.... and not northern LIBERAL Republicans who are now almost extinct. (along with African-Americans and Jews and other progressives) In 40 years, some Republican partisan will be claiming "The GOP fought hard for gay rights"...point to the ONE or TWO Republicans who are now in support....and the Democrats who first opposed it....and claim "conservatives were the ones fighting for the right to marry!"
That 90-10 split will be based on a majority of simple homophobes who still hate gays, but once the fight is over, will move on and do a "Fox & The Grapes" routine after they lose. The 10% who will continue ranting about gay marriage, long after it's nationally legal....claiming "all the court cases made in the last 5 years are wrong....the ones made in 1990 are correct!!!!" or doing "homosexuality=pedophilia" attack posts.... will be the ones who have this obsession about homosexuality, which is clearly linked to self-guilt over being a closeted homosexual. The "wheat" will be separated from the "chaff"...and it'll be plainly obvious.
