I really like the guy. So I should have known the RIGHT didn't! But I gotta admit, I didn't EVEN think DeGrasse Tyson would have been on their radar screen enough to do an article about him with scorn or derision. And that last sentence will really (*)(*)(*)(*) 'em off. (Maher is Maher, no surprises there).

Maher to Neil deGrasse Tyson: Republicans hate you for being black and smarter than them

    By David Ferguson
    Friday, July 25, 2014 23:26 EDT

Friday night on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, Maher asked astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson why it is that Republicans seem to dislike him so much.

As evidence, Maher showed Tyson the National Review Neil deGrasse Tyson cover story called “Smarter Than Thou,” in which writers for the conservative news organ bemoaned the burgeoning “puffed-up ‘nerd’ culture” in the U.S. as people speak out on behalf of science and against religious quackery and superstition.

Maher opined that Republicans dislike Tyson because “you’re a scientist and you’re a black one” and it upsets them that Tyson is demonstrably “smarter than they are, so it’s terrible, it’s like Obama: a black person taking a white person’s job because they’re better at it, how dare he!”

Tyson said, “There appears to be some jealousy that the ‘nerd’ set, the geek set tends to vote Democrat and I think they want some of those geeks.”

“I didn’t get that,” Maher said. “I think one thing that they really don’t like something that ‘Cosmos’ gets at almost every week, is that we are very insignificant. And somehow this offends them, which seems stupid.”

Insignificance could “depress you, sure,” said Tyson, but if you look more deeply, he said, you see how everything is connected.

This is a lie. Carl Sagan got the same flack and he's white. Why does Bill Maher insist on making Tyson's color the issue?

Ironically, conservatives also love Ben Carson for being black and "smarter than them." Maher is just doing his shock jock thing and people like OP take him seriously.

I don't have know for sure what MAHER'S thinking is. But I doubt he is off the mark. A month or so ago, ON THIS BOARD, a poster said NO BLACK MEN ever invented anything and so I'm going say, by extension, I'll ASSUME HE DIDN'T THINK there were many ASTROPHYSICISTS. So I gave him a list of several inventors and scientists of the 'negro' persuasion. I'm betting Maher is on to something!!

So there is no such thing as a black conservative?

"Conservatives hate you becuase you are black....."
More often than not, usually the person who tries to say something is racist, is usually the racist themself.

In my opinion, its the politicians and media that is keeping people from getting over all sense of racism. How many times do we hear both of them preach about trying to get "the black vote" or the "hispanic vote"... Media titles like this about Mr. Maher suggest that conservatives cant be black and increase a false stereotype that conservatives are racist against blacks.

What americans really need to do is stop accepting opinions as fact. Do some real research from an unbiased source and make a decision for yourself. Stop being lazy sheeple.

Well I, for one, am somewhat conservative and I like Tyson. There are different kinds of conservatives. There are the "trailer park" kind (definitely anti-intellectual) who Maher is talking about (while trying to insinuate that they represent all conservatives). Then there are those like William F. Buckley, the ones Maher doesn't like to talk about because it ruins his narrative. It is pretty ironic, though, that National Review would write such an article, considering that Buckley (NR's founder) is definitely a "smarter than thou" type.

Another funny example of leftists deciding "what nonleftists like and don't like," and then compounding the fallacy by broadcasting and parroting it out in the leftblogosphere. None of them nor their retarded audience understands logic, and to them a strawman is just another form of discussion technique... Jerry Springer said so.

Seems like a decent enough communicator, and I do enjoy his documentaries. I disagree with him over public funding of space exploration though. NASA/ESA should be abolished.

I love Bill Maher. He is a satirist and makes me laugh... but I do not watch his show to be informed but to be entertained. He is biased and it is reflected in his monologs... which is fine as its satire! The commentary between the two men is opinion and stimulating to watch, but certainly something that I would do my own vetting before I took anything said as fact. What Bill Maher says I take with a grain of salt just like when I use to watch Bill O'Reilly who while not a satirist, offers opinion (political analysts).

I don't like the religious types, I like the charismatic entertainer, science reader and presenter (how many papers did he publish again?) deGrassie Tyson, and I hate mainstream media outlets such as the CNN right now as i write, who will praise rap artists but when it comes to Rock will only discuss the nerdy Beatles and only the very nerdy stuff they did back in the 60s, but everything else in Rock that came in after the Beatles is history's black page. I guess the mainstream on both left and right does not have much to offer, they are either deceptive or misguided or both.

Do I think race is a part of it? No. Do I think that he has a point of him being smarter then GOPers? No. Do I think it's because they're trying to win a cultural war by basically belittling the millenials and make it seem like the youth don't know what's going on, which in turn feeds their notion that they're smarter then they look? Yes.

I'm sure Maher may have been thinking about himself when he needlessly and gratuitously slandered all conservatives.
That is to say, he (Maher) is the one that has a problem with an intelligent black scientist.
But that's the mark of a "brilliant" man, isn't it? Thinking in cartoonish and simplistic black and white caricatures.
