A new study released by the Washington Post reveals that for every 1000 people killed at the hands of police, only one officer is convicted of a crime. Since 2005, although there have been thousands of fatal shootings by police officers, only 54 have been charged. Of those charged, most were cleared or acquitted. http://thefreethoughtproject.com/study-reveals-police-officers-murder-alarming-rate/ This analysis is, to date, the most comprehensive of its kind. According to the Post:http://www.washingtonpost.com/sf/investigative/2015/04/11/thousands-dead-few-prosecuted/ Well, i can't agree with all article's statements, but i agree that stats looks very bad... I understand that policemen are our shield, our protectors and heroes, but sometimes... They're really mad, and according to the statistics, today, we have more mad policemen than ever and i can't say that this is good!
I guess I don't see the problem. Cops are generally very professional and know their job is on the line if they pull that trigger when they shouldn't. They have families to support too, that they won't be able to help if they are in prison. So I think the stats seem about right.
The problem is that everyone has been brainwashed by watching a lifetime of cops and robbers shows. People tend to cheer when the bad guys get filled with hot lead and it's hard for them to draw a line between the movies and real life when the cops kill innocent people. After seeing thousands of shoot-outs the average person doesn't have too much empathy for real-life victims of cops' excesses and murderous rampages. So they tend to let the cop thugs get away with their murders while they would gladly hang their neighbor if he did the exact same thing in the exact same conditions. It's easy to see that attitude in action. Just ask people if a normal guy next door had shot someone like a cop did if the person would be charged a crime. They will invariably say "yes" but they will almost always excuse the cop. That's from a lifetime of brainwashing.
No, that is exactly as it should be. So, you want to see more cops killed? Because that is exactly what will happen if the cops do not pull that trigger when they need to. There are plenty of laws and procedures in place to keep the police honest. Do some bad ones slip through the cracks? Of course. If you start stacking the deck against the police, however, it will backfire, and we will see a large spike in violent crime.
I don't think I agree that more US policemen are mad per se; but I do believe that the concept of 'serve and protect' has changed to 'everyone is a criminal, even if they are not'; and even small local police forces have become paramilitary forces. We have a massive problem across the western hemisphere, where our military police forces have now crept into everyday life, where phoning the police for help can cost you 'your' life. We have SWAT teams or their equivalents serving warrants for non violent crimes with no threat to human life; and policemen who seem to have forgotten that they are employed by us the people to serve and protect, not dish out their own warped version of retribution. That includes shooting unarmed black men who may be guilty of not paying child support in the back until their gun is empty. We should be worried and not necessarily just about criminals, but also those who are being paid by us, to keep us safe.
Maybe we should all worry more about the degradation of society that is leading to more violent crime that is forcing police officers to pull the trigger. Do you all seriously think that in this time of supercharged awareness of police brutality, that any cop is going to shoot unless they have to? They all know how heavily scrutinized they are right now. Be that as it may, they want to make it home alive to see their families at night. They are damned if they shoot, more damned if they don't.
I think you will find Josh that violent crime in the US has fallen by 4.4% it is not increasing. What is increasing in the US is the number of SWAT and paramilitary police teams being deployed to non- violent crime. This has nothing to do with many police departments now depending on civil asset forfeiture for a fat chunk of their budgets of course.
Do you think the media painting them as racists, the President painting them as raving lunatics, and people targeting them for assassination makes them more or less likely to be angry? Also, the stats look very good unless you believe our judicial system is corrupt. Police are involved daily with the most violent pieces of crap on our planet, if there are thousands of deaths with only 54 charged and subsequently being acquitted, it means the vast majority of police are doing their jobs correctly. If you don't want to be shot by Police, its very simple, all you need to do is act like a civilized human being. If they pull you over, don't attack them, don't insult them, don't grab their guns, don't make any quick movements, don't reach back inside your car when they tell you not to and don't run. These are all things the rest of us figured out by the time we were teenagers using barely any brain power. Well I guess if you're a criminal you've already failed on achieving intelligence, so the stats makes sense.
Exactly. It amazes me how patient police officers are with the complete idiots they have to deal with. What these guys do every day makes them heroes, but in this sick twisted society we live in, everything gets turned on its head. - - - Updated - - - I would say it has been falling because we are shooting the idiots committing the crimes.
Exactly, or its been falling because the slightly smarter criminals have decided they would rather get jobs than get shot acting like an idiot. I will predict, the copcams will turn out to be a good idea for police officers and will backfire on the left. As we saw the video of the cop getting shot in the face here in boston and the guttural reaction from citizens towards these violent thugs afterwards, when all cops start videotaping their daily confrontations we will all see with out own eyes what these guys have to deal with on daily basis. This new fountain of video footage will show the nation the problem isn't the cops, the problem is violent thugs running like rampant animals through our society is. Then we can ask Obama why he vilified the police rather than the criminals.
This is pretty much a meaningless statistic with false presumptions as to the outcome. For starters, anytime a police officer discharges their firearm, regardless if the person is killed or not, a shooting board is convened to determine if the casue was justified. Usually it is given the fact that the police officer followed proceedures. However, in a few cases, it may be necessary to question the procedures in that circumstance such as the choke hold death of a suspect in NYC. The goal in questioning those procedures should be based on the fact that it should be to help the police department do a better job rather than blatant, unwarranted screaming. Of the few cases where the shooting may not be easily understood, the police department has to do a good job in explaining their position without condemning the person who wss killed.
Violent crime in the US has been on the decline for years. Killings by cop are increasing year on year. http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/uc...olent-crime-topic-page/violentcrimemain_final http://theweek.com/speedreads/441954/fbi-violent-crime-down-but-police-killing-civilians
Funny. WE have had movies that has glorified the robbers such as Scarface, The God Father and its sequels, Public Enemy No. 1 and so forth. The gangsters of Al Capone during the prohibition era definitely floirifed those types of criminals because they had the personalities that intrigued the public. For modern day, we have had made for TV movies that involved the Menedez brothers and Moonshiners. So there is definitely glorification on the robbers/criminal side. For the cops, we have Dragnet, Hill Street Blues, NYPD, Blue Bloods, Law and Order and tis series that definitely portray the police and prosecution on a oositive side with glorification of their duties. For movies, we have Colors, 54 Jump Street (original), LA Confidential, Serpico, Dirty Harry, Bad Boys, etc. I am not including the police comedy movies such as Police Acady in this list. There is glorification on both sides. But the movies and TV shows often relect what society is thinking, contemplating, discussing, or relecting. But it is definitely not a one sided issue when it comes on both sides of the law here.
Is it because the police use the firearm as a crutch or is it because the police officers are dealing with desperate persons?
You can thank the increased number of law abiding people having a CCW for the former. You can thank teen parents (I use that word loosely) not teaching their multiple kids to respect people, or the law for the latter.
While I agree that it is important to have the cops as a shield against greater harms, sometimes their use of force is either unnecessary or excessive. I also think that many of the recent black shootings, like Michael Brown in Ferguson, could be seen both ways. While it was wrong for the cop to shoot him, it is a proven fact that six blacks are incarcerated for every white, so you can see why officers would be more suspicious of blacks as having done something wrong. However, that having been said, it was still wrong for them to shoot Michael Brown. That was just overuse of force. I do not mean to be racist, I am just comparing two sides of a debate. Apologies to anyone I may offend.
That has never been proven that CCW has an impact on crime. In fact it really does not since crime has gone down where CCW is not available either. This is not an argument against CCW, but people really need to underhand why crime happens. It rarely has to do with whether or not someone is a CCW while stop trying to pretend you are a hero.
Are you indicting our courts? Looks to me like the police are doing an excellent job. One in a thousand? Hard to ask for a better ratio. Hands up! Don't BS me.
You're the one that brought up Hollywood/TV as a force of bias. So tell us how you're not biased as well.
