Of course John Petrucci from Dream Theater! The dude can play some seriously crazy riffs, but also makes incredible solos.

Here's another one of my favorites - Buckethead

This is from his collaboration with Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell and Brain on Praxis' Transmutation...

    ...and solo...

I'd also have to throw James Hetfield in there. Such amazing riffs.

I respect any guitarist that has the balls to go on stage and fire up their rig and axe and play for an audience. I have been in bands all my life and have absolutely enjoyed all the guitarists I have had the pleasure to hear and play with.

People have mentioned Allman and Kottke; here is Kottke playing Allman's masterpiece:

Sublime is not strong enough to describe it.

I've been watching a lot of Dave Mustaine lately. I' didn't listen to Megadeth back in the day, but wow, that is some amazing stuff. I really like Cliff Burton on Bass too.

My favorites are Stevie Stevens who was the amazing guitarist for Billy Idol, Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin, but I think the best guitarist around today is Matt Bellamy from MUSE. Bellamy's innovative mixing of rock electronics and classical chording can cause serious eargasms.

I have three actually. First is Roger Waters:

    Second is Mark Knopfler

Last, and arguably the best. Matt Bellamy of Muse.

I just recently heard the news that guitarist Chuck Loeb has died. May he rest in peace. Not my favorite, but certainly one of my best.

I don't have one. It probably doesn't help that I tend to favor electronic music over the traditional kinds that normally feature guitars.

I might as well shout out Robby Krieger of the Doors for being awesome, though. He played well and wrote some good tunes for the group.
