They have begun fundraising efforts and raised millions. Doesn't mean they won't keep most of that money. Typically, the advertised recipients of "sudden" charities get little or nothing. It's all a scam.

 

Then what's the point of masturbation if you can't do it yourself?

 

"Launch" is the key word here. They didn't donate their money, they are using their fame to get others to donate. Entertainers have not been personally giving million dollar donations to Texas flood victims. Putting their celebrity face out there and telling every one ELSE to give is chicken droppings. So don't even try to compare "talking" about it to "doing" it.

Even if well-intended, fund raising campaigns are often set up in response to catastrophic events but are comprised of inexperienced people trying to figure it out. They are unable to spend that money effeciently and quickly. Instead, they suck it all up in "administrative" costs and pay themselves big salaries and bonuses out of the money.

The Red Cross, on the other hand, has the network, capacity and procurement contracts in place and are ready to stream the money out into the community quickly and efficiently. Anyone who is sincere about actually giving something to help can write a check to Red Cross and announce it publically in hopes others will follow the example.

During a terrible catastrophy, we will often encounter many sudden charities sprouting up ready to collect money from well-meaning people. However, too many have no intention of passing money along to the flood victims. This has been a long time scam, and personally I think anyone seeking to profit from something like this should be shot.
