I think there are travelers and there are travelers. I've been to many countries some Americans would think are 'sh*****e' countries (I don't use such a stupid, ignorant term myself). I was in London once and heard an Amerian tourist calling it a 3rd world country. Most likely, IMO, an American who calls another country by that derogatory term is someone who is small minded and ignorant of the country as a whole. Someone who looks down on another country rather than understanding its culture and the many diverse aspects of the country. Bigots use that term, not thinking, educated, knowledgeable people. I've been to over 40 countries and lived and worked in 6, outside the US and on different continents.

The quote 'Travel expands the mind...' is true for most people, but not for all: when traveling, I've met enough people, especially Americans, to know it is not true for everyone.

Understanding the country is a shithole has nothing to do with looking down on it and everything to do with understanding it. I have travelled to 30+ and lived in three myself. Some countries are literally shitholes. Just accept it.
