I agree that most teachers should not carry a gun or any kind of weapon, maybe a defensive can of pepper spray.

Trump has suggested arming teachers to defend classrooms — and veterans are ripping the idea

    • The deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last week has reinvigorated debate about arming teachers.
    • President Donald Trump has spoken in favor of the idea, saying it would be cheaper than hiring guards and would be a deterrent.
    • But many people with experience using firearms under duress have been critical, calling it impractical and dangerous.

President Donald Trump suggested on Wednesday that arming teachers and school staff members could provide security against events like the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last week, in which 17 students and school workers were killed.

"If you had a teacher who was adept with the firearm, they could end the attack very quickly," Trump said at the White House, during a meeting with students and parents from the school.

"This would be obviously only for people who were very adept at handling a gun," Trump added. "It's called concealed carry, where a teacher would have a concealed gun on them. They'd go for special training and they would be there and you would no longer have a gun-free zone."

Trump clarified his comments on Thursday morning, stressing that he said "to look at the possibility of" arming teachers with military backgrounds or special training — "only the best."

"Highly trained teachers would also serve as a deterrent to the cowards that do this," he added. "Far more assets at much less cost than guards."

Despite Trump's stipulations, the idea of arming teachers and other school staff was widely panned — especially by veterans with experience using high-powered weapons and firing under duress.

There was an armed, trained police officer on the scene in our latest NRA sponsored event in Florida. He was ineffective. Now, we're going to arm a bunch of teachers with vastly less training to hopefully turn into a skilled operator in times of crisis. I wish you guys could hear yourselves talk. Absolutely ridiculous. The only thing arming some teachers is going to do is cause accidental deaths in the school. I know this narrative plays into the paranoid fantasies of right wing lunatics but, it's not reasonable.

So, one coward officer proves teachers couldnt handle their own protection? I love all these anecdotes.

You want anecdotes? Show me all the situations where armed civilians with little training have turned into rambos and acted with the same precision a law enforcement officer would.

The coward cop shows that even with a high level of training (that armed teachers would only have a fraction of), people will more often than not fail in these situations. I know it's a paranoid fantasy of every NRA shill that someday they'll get to be a cowboy and shoot up some bad guys but that's all it is, a paranoid fantasy. Our children deserve more than some ammosexuals' lurid fantasies about overcoming inadequacy.

The first time a teacher shoots a student, which would happen, the impact on the profession and on education would be catastrophic.

So letting people die is better? And why do you keep assuming that teachers are incompetent morons? By the way I'm sure most states will cheerfully enact good samaritan laws to protect teachers who carry in defense of their students.

For those who support the idea, why do you believe very conservative states (like Florida when it comes to guns) have not passed this law already (arming teachers). Unions and teachers have very little influence in that state so their opposition is likely not it.

Exactly, it doesn't happen and wouldn't happen for teachers either. But those who have trained themselves and with NRA and have become comfortable with their tools have saved many lives, many times, much more than people who have committed mass murder.

Cause of the federal law making schools gun free zones?

It depends entirely on the circumstances. Teacher is female punk shot was in the process of trying to rape her. Hell there are certain areas of the Us in which that might have the salutary effect of informing various punks that teachers are not there to be targets for random violence.

There was a liberal coward in uniform with a gun, it happens.

Meanwhile, inside the building, unarmed teachers tried to stop the gunman, as they always do when these happen in gun free zones.

Meanwhile, back in reality in places like Utah, teachers have been carrying guns for a decade and no one has been killed, no student has karate chopped a teacher and taken their gun, and zero school shootings have occurred.

This thread is full of liberal theater and their ridiculous imaginations.

Unless you can come up with actual SOURCES, I would consider all of your post to be fake news.

President Trump did say that teachers carrying a weapon should be paid more money, adding that it would be cheaper and more effective than hiring armed guards.

I'm a war veteran and a member of many veterans groups and ALL of the veterans I talk to agree that training and arming certain teachers would, at worst, act as a possible deterrent and would slow down the killer if an active shooter situation did occur.

Fine, then IGNORE all those who are calling for teachers to be armed, fight them........and if the school wants to be gun free then teachers should not be allowed to volunteer.

Don't put the whole burden on Mr. Trump. The idea of arming everybody and shooting everything that moves has been the only thing gun wackos have been talking about since long before Trump came onto the scene. The people with guns on their mind are underachieving scaredy-cats with no character and even less courage. Most of them would crap themselves if you said "boo!" and the only thing they can hit with a bullet is the bottom end of the holster trying to pull the gun out.

Arming teachers is like mandating that arterial wounds should be treated with band aids.

One in a thousand might be lucky enough to stop the bleeding.

    The rest bleed out

We need to get these guns out of the hands of these madmen

Now we get to hear a bunch of juvenile minded Democrats explaining how the hated their teachers in school and sneering about teachers calling the fat, stupid, incompetent and old - to add to the prior messages elsewhere of how much they hate senior citizens such as their parents and grandparents.

For which you plan would instead to just say "let the person bleed to death."

What we need is to protect the children the government has forcibly taken custody of and then put into building that include the highest violent crime rates in the country - over 750,000 violent crimes against students each year in k-12 public schools.
