Once a controlled shut-down is completed, it's not an issue. Get over it already.

Don't be deluded. Pay attention to the simple chart below. Modern nuclear weapons are 1,000 times more powerful than the ones dropped on Hiroshima. Try to imagine the carnage caused if only one warhead reached Washington DC, Moscow or London. People would surivive. Yes. But it would be back to the stone age. The survival of the fittest. Unimaginable savagery all over again.

This chart shows the terrifying power of modern nuclear bombs

Let's hope we never have to find out.

Of course. 90% fatalities from 323 million means 32.3 million will survive in the USA.....mostly Preppers. :)

Completely misleading. Most nuclear weapons in the world are a fraction of the size of a B53 or Castle Bravo.

If you would read from the link in the OP you would find that the average nuclear weapon is 250 kilotons or about ONE THIRTY SIXTH the size of the B53.

The most advanced U.S. strategic nuclear warhead is the W88, 475 kilotons or about ONE NINETEENTH the size of the B53

There are only a handful of multi megaton nuclear weapons in existence in the world.

Actually worst case for the United States it would probably mean 32.3 million fatalities and 290 million survivors.

What is your source of estimation? How many would die in the ensuing months?

I'm going with the early 1980s estimates of the effect of a major nuclear exchange with the Soviet Union back when the Soviets had more nuclear weapons than they do today. The projections then were for a Soviet attack on military targets in the U.S. 20-40 million Americans would be killed so I split the difference.

A strictly city busting attack by the Soviets make no sense.

Military targets. A good first strike target, but where is the guarantee a second wave of attacks on civilian population centers wouldn't follow? BTW, is train depot or port as military target? Yes, it is. Anything that supports the military, no matter how little, is a military target.

In addition, despite your lack of solid references, I suspect that would be deaths outright, not the deaths in the following months due to a collapse of government and the economy. New Orleans after Katrina is what the entire urban US would look like without the promise of outside support. Cities would run out of food and supplies in days. The only reason our nation can support so many millions is due to our network of trucks and trains ferrying supplies from sources to outlets. Once the economy collapsed (mainly because Wall Street is in ashes), the system would break down. Unless you can grow enough food to feed yourself and your family, along with a fresh water supply, you too would soon start feeling the effects.

    https://www.tdsource.com/2016/08/03/if-trucking-stops/
    In the first 24 hours…
Delivery of medical supplies to the affected area will cease.
Hospitals will run out of necessary supplies.
Service stations will begin to run out of fuel.
Manufacturers using just-in-time manufacturing will develop component shortages.
U.S. mail and other package delivery will cease.
Automobile fuel availability and delivery will dwindle, leading to skyrocketing prices and long lines at gas pumps.

    In just 2-3 days…
Food shortages will escalate, especially in the face of consumer hoarding and panic.
Supplies of essentials like bottled water, powdered milk, and canned meat at major retailers will begin to disappear.
ATM’s will run out of cash and banks will be unable to process transactions.
Service stations will completely run out of fuel.
Garbage will start piling up in urban and suburban areas.
Container ships will sit idle in ports and rail transport will be disrupted, eventually coming to a standstill.

    In just one week…
Automobile travel will cease due to lack of fuel.
Hospitals will begin to exhaust oxygen supplies.

    In just two weeks…
Clean water supply will begin to run dry.

I don't worry about the US or UK arsenal. We aren't going to nuke ourselves, are we? The Russians developed Sarmat 2 missile, the missile is that powerful that one cruise missile carrying a nuclear warhead is capable of destroying the area of size of France or Texas. A single missile called Satan 2. By the way, it's irresponsible to downplay the power of nuclear weapons.

    What makes ICBMs so threatening
Intercontinental ballistic missiles are similar to rockets that shoot satellites and people into orbit, but ICBMs carry warheads and hit targets on Earth

The Russians have very few Satan ICBMs. And very few of those have the extremely large warheads.

And a 25 megaton warhead cannot destroy an area the size of France or Texas.

I've played with that site before. It's interesting.

I detonated a 100 megaton warhead on Dallas, TX and the deadly effects don't even reach my house.

You ignore the obvious. In the build up to a nuclear exchange (and there certainly would be) there would be lots of opportunities to stockpile massive amounts of vital fuel, food, medicines and other supplies.

How many weeks do you have the funds and space to stock up on? 2? 4? 8? Then what? Do you have a well? Alternative source of power to pump it? Septic tank? I do. Most people don't.

I don't remember where i read it, but a nuclear apocalypse is not going to erase humanity, let alone destroy all life. We are a resilient species overall... we would be probably thrown into some kind of middle ages, with a mix of technology and crude tools, but we should survive.

The radiation would cause a lot of premature death and diseases but it is still not enough to erase homo sapiens.

Off hand I would estimate 4 weeks. You can do a lot in four weeks.

A good reason to invest in windmills and/or solar panels.

My wife and I recently put $25K into a solar power system for our house. I'd have preferred windmills but, even though everyone around me lives on two acres (residential airpark), the neighbors complained, so I spent almost $10K for solar panels.
