I've been avoiding this thread because I didn't think this situation had any political relevance. But today I found myself looking at it and saw some people seemingly giddy at the prospect of Manafort going to jail which leads me to ask the following:

Manafort didn't commit a violent crimes, if convicted, what purpose would it serve to put him in prison - isn't part of the current liberal philosophy to not send non violent criminals to prison? Can the cost of incarcerating Manafort be justified relative to the crime he committed when fines would probably suffice?

The guy is up there in years, where is that famous liberal compassion I keep hearing about?

The thing is, the government's position(government meaning organization, not the Trump Administration specifically) would be, if we did that NO ONE would pay taxes. Would you rather pay a fine or a tax?(Well, if the taxes are lower than the fines, obviously) but if fines were lower than the amount of taxes, then everyone would cheat on the system.

That being said, from an economic standpoint I believe taxes will be obsolete within the next decade, as economies around the world expand. We're at trillions now, imagine in a decade+.

Very good point... Even I've probably stated prison is his likely destination, but I agree with you 100%... He's a non violent white collar criminal and I don't want to clog our prison system with more of those. However, there's still got to be a "physical" and financial penalty for people like this.

Financial is obvious... back taxes, interest, penalties, and whatever else is allowed by law, still keeping a roof and food for his wife.

I don't have a great answer for the physical part... I guess in my dream world, I'd set all the Manaforts of the world to serving our world.... cleaning rivers, beaches and highways, picking up trash in woods, taking down brush, fixing up playgrounds, maintaining state and national parks... 40 hours a week for the length of your sentence, reacquiring your ankle monitor. Nothing ridiculously hard, with breaks and shade and nutrition...

Just throwing something out there... I'm open to ideas...I thought young master Jared was into prison reform??

I hate the idea of prison for non-violent offenders when we can put these people to use...

EDIT - P.S. Forgot to mention... that same application would work for Hillary "Lock her up" Clinton.... should it ever come to that...

True most of the accusations follow in the same breath. Really, it's a troubling part of our world that money, the green is still needed to feed and cloth, etc. There were some rumors/speculations, etc about the cashless society. I'd love to see it. I think that humanity freed from money might also move closer to a humanitarian, egalitarian view of the world.

I think large fines and some sort of community service would be appropriate, but not the kind of community service which requires someone to line up the chairs at an AA meeting, I mean something meaningful and suitable for the person's age and fitness.

Its not meant to because it doesn't need it.

It is meant to weaken their defense of said argument

He'll get pardoned before that is allowed to happen, since the case has nothing to do with Trump.

    "That may DIRECTLY arise..."

Please explain how the SAME CHARGES that BOTH Mueller and Rosenstein knew about then, and Rosenstein declined to prosecute, SOMEHOW, " arose DIRECTLY" from investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Manafort was indicted to try to FORCE HIM to give/makeup something the Witch Hunt could "get Trump" on... PERIOD.

Am I "the left"? I can't stand Rangel or Sharpton and Bernie is definitely past it. Is everyone who does not support Manafort, Trump, Flynn and the pack of Russian spies and mobsters that they had around them, "the left"....It isn't about left vs right champ, it's about right vs wrong. Evidently, Manafort was earning tons of money, funneling it through a Cypress bank which is known to be the same one that Putin and his band of gangster friends were using as a laundromat then wire transferring it to buy millions in US goods and real estate. Some $60 million all told. If you or I made that kind of money and payed little or no US income taxes, we would be sitting right where he is. Especially if we left a paper trail as long and wide as interstate 80. He has only himself to blame.

The so called "Witch hunt" has produced what are know as criminal indictments alleging that Mr. Manafort has avoided paying US income taxes and filed several fraudulent documents in order to acquire loans. If you or I did the same as he did, we would be charged also. It happens every day. Just because Manafort knows and worked for Trump does not exempt him from paying his taxes or give him free reign to file phony loan applications.

    Not completely true.

The judge has already made clear that prosecutors will be allowed to talk about exactly where Manaforts laundered money came from. AKA Russian back oligarchs.
