And here is another thing - if there was no slave trade most of their descendants would never be born because their ancestors would have been slaughtered by other blacks.
While slavery is a bad thing, it’s a lesser evil, considering the circumstances.

An instant philosophical question - would Africans keep murdering and disfiguring each other if there was another alternative of selling your victims into slavery? I don’t advocate slavery, just having this thought exercise.

I was taught the golden triangle. slaves were nothing more than one part of the triangle. Ships would sail to Europe loaded with goods from the US, then take textiles and rum to Africa, then slaves back to the US.

The cause was nothing more than a desire for a profitable route. I guess you can get into the reasons why slaves were part of the triangle, but they were just cargo.

That's since been changed to taking a moral approach to the slave trade, when morality had nothing to do with it. Slaves, sugar, rum, cotton, it's just cargo.

    Was, not is.
It was an issue 155 years ago.
Serfdom in Russia ended around the same time slavery ended in the US. Do you see Russians running around the world whining about it?

I'm sure that some blacks would love for it to still be a major issue to push for a bit more white guilt money, but they are a very small minority, and should be laughed at and then ignored. They have no logic to their argument, but lots of emotion.

Quite, it was a global thing really, probably the first worldwide trade route that included Africa as a major component. That's really ironic when you consider that geography had pretty much cut sub-saharan Africa off from the rest of the world quite effectively up until this time. An interesting insight that neatly dovetails with one of the major themes in Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs and Steel, and which I can't recall seeing anywhere else. i must look into this further, Thank you, Belch.

Well yeh, the serfs did just that, and quite effectively up until 1989, after they took over the country and tried to push communism on the rest of the world, but then communism's internal contradictions caught up with it.

That's hard to say. I remember very vaguely there being something about the way the Bantu tribes make war that made them take a real surplus of prisoners and this is supposedly what made them start the slave trade with the Arabs in the 10th century but I''m damned if I can remember what it was and finding anything unbiased about slavery on the net is next to impossible. Can anyone help?

Neat! Someone finally gets it.

Yeah, with me having grown up black in the one area of America that at least pays lip service to the idea of equality, I missed a whole lot of injustice and history that had been well and nearly whitewashed, forgotten about or just plain made up. I have far too many younger cousins who view MKL as the sellout centralist he always derided because of how his history has been taught. In California, no less.

White indentured servents were not beats and raped the way black slaves were on a regular basis.

Yeah, that Arab slave trade was dreadfully brutal alright. Good thing white European and North American civilization came along and put a stop to it, huh?

Slavery is ugly everywhere it was and is practiced. Everywhere includes much more than the U.S., including your country, wherever that is. Sadly slavery hasn't disappeared yet.

Exactly, but let's not pretend that slavery was unique to North America and white Europeans, okay?

America was built on the hard-calloused hands of people who worked their arse off until their hands were no longer fit to use, and then they died. Many of them were slaves and they had it worse than anybody else, but now the descendents of slaves can get them a hard hat and a hammer like anybody else.
