Actually, in the words of one of my old co workers, who worked in one of Saddam's Nuclear facilities before sneaking his family out when desert storm started: "My people are insane. We need people like Saddam to keep us in line." Not sure how much I agree but everything I've heard about the middle East from the mid 70s and back (prior to all the religious extremism uprising) sounds pretty amazing and a lot of fun. Maybe they need control, maybe constant interventions by foreign powers has allowed extremism to take over, I don't know. There has been so many pushes and pulls, places destroyed and people driven from their homes that I can't tell if getting everyone out and leaving them to their own devices will help more then hurt anymore. It's a complex quagmire that won't ever be solved by little ol' me up in my Canadian tower of safety security. I've never had to dodge sniper fire just to get to school. How can we even begin to understand that kind of life.
