Either way, first, if they're immigrating to our country, then we would have knowledge of it. Secondly, Americans already here are having a hard enough time getting tests due to the inept Federal response. Third, immigrants come to this country from all around world...why are you assuming this just relates to Latin America? Lastly, the disease is already here and we're pretty much dead last in our effectiveness in preventing the transmission so I fail to see what point you're making with your last sentence.

And your point never addressed my OP. If the Trump admin is for the states to loosen restrictions, why would the Trump admin raise restrictions relating to immigration?

 

You wanna see the country open up quickly? Just have Trump declare there will be no election in November and will not be one until this pandemic is under control.

 

It mostly does, one third of our LEGAL immigrants are from Mexico. We need merit based immigration, from ANY country. Being related to someone (chain immigration) is an accident, not a qualification.

 

So the whole country is in lockdown with no flights going in or out. Trump signs an EO to suspend immigration. Err, how are immigrants going to get in anyway legally? I think of them as migrant workers.

That's fine, as long as they come in with proper documentation, and they leave within the time they're allotted.

That said, I thinks it's a wise move to curtail even that during the current crisis.

 

Many immigrants are already here and can just stay home here. Including some of my family. Trump hasn't clarified if immigrant residents will be impacted by his order or not. I hope he exercises some rare rationalism and excludes them from his order, but I won't hold my breath.

Most non-citizen immigrants don't qualify for food stamps. And I don't think there is any evidence that immigration = lower demand for employment.

I just wish that reason mattered more than dabbing and "owning the libs." No danger of that ever happening with Trump, of course. Maybe if Haley runs one day things will change.

If people are taking a course toward citizenship or are signed up for the citizenship test they should get a break.

It isn't exactly that simple. Even being here legally and contributing to our economy is an uphill battle toward citizenship. My wife was a cancer researcher and had been here legally for over 20 years and still found it nearly impossible to go from a visa to a green card, much less citizenship. My sister-in-law is in the same boat now, though as an MBA from one of the more prestigious universities in the US and working for a fortune 500 company instead of being a cancer researcher. Just hoping Trump's ban is focused on those not yet in the country and not immigrants already here, but again, not holding my breath given his previous actions. When it comes to immigration, rationalism typically doesn't enter his brain . . . well, that seems par for the course overall, actually.

 

It all depends on what country one is migrating from. For instance, Indian people (CURRENTLY) are experiencing a HUGE problem becoming citizens. Each country outside of the US gets a certain amount of H-1B visas. Countries that are very small often find it easier since 2014 to get access and path to citizenship.

I only know this because my last assignment was involved in this.
