Well if HBO is pulling Gone With The Wind out of rotation (and they are) then we are in free fall as far as this stuff goes.

 

The term is often used with the word, 'south' as in 'antebellum south', is a term associated with the plantation era, ie., the terms 'antibellum south' and 'plantatation era' mean essentially the same thing, as it was a period in the history of the Southern United States from the late 18th century until the start of the American Civil War in 1861 (wikipedia).

 

It literally means before the war.

How is changing names, tearing down statues, burning, looting even occupying city blocks going to change a damn thing? How about having black only police precincts in predominately black areas so when something goes wrong in these neighborhoods it can't blow up into riots. How about having white cops handling whites and black cops handling blacks so if someone dies in custody it is only an unfortunate event and may create some form of localized protests but not criminal rampages. Anyone who thinks renaming anything is meaningful at this time is just really shallow, patronizing and virtue signaling.

Tell me, prior to any of this, did you ever hear of this Anita White aka Lady A?

To be honest, I never heard of Lady Antebellum prior to 2 years ago. So it's not the name that I was applauding, it was the act.

 

In point of legal fact, Anita White has a strong case to force the other (alleged) singer to drop the theft. I'd never heard of Lady Antebellum until this misappropriation became news.

 

Many military installations are named after their location so it shouldn’t be difficult renaming the problematic ones. The locales should receive the props for housing the installations anyway.
