I used to be more Conservative-Independent-Libertarian-ish. Then I unhitched the Christian plow, now I'm more Liberal-Indendent-Libertarian-ish.

I concur, 1000% about the 2 party and their corruption to the money handlers.
I always call them good cop/bad cop, they rotate positions depending on which party occupies the WH.

    Dying is not necessarily "PAIN".
It is becoming weaker and weaker until there is not enough energy
    to support life.

I Hospice my aging, dying cats.

When cats stop eating and drinking, it may still take weeks.
But, they appreciate Love Time the same

I've seen cats with kidney stones.
No cat I hospiced had "that" look.

I know you will make the right decision.
And I’m sincere in saying if you need to talk I will be here.

    @Moi621
My cat stopped eating and I took her to a vet who only serviced cats. She was a very sweet Jewish lady who told me that cats can linger for a very long time and it would be selfish to let that happen. She begged me to get another one but I couldn’t go through that again.

A week later I got a letter in the mail saying that a tree was planted in Israel for Sara.

    Still hard to think about!

    Thanks for your response.

Even though Mercury is eating well, using the litter box and still his affectionate, old self, he has to wear a cone to keep from tearing at what remains of his left ear. He has cancer so we had the left ear surgically removed. It healed nicely for a while but the cancer came back and he kept scratching until he now has a wound that will never heal and will eventually spread to the rest of his head.

As I mentioned earlier, Mercury has to wear a neck cone around his neck to keep him from scratching the wound where his ear was. I found the most comfortable cone I could find but he still scratches at the wound site except when he gets his pain medicine.

My decision about his future will have to be based on the degree to which he adjusts to the cone that he has to wear to protect the wound.
Mercury can't go outside like he used to because he may get stuck somewhere. He also can't clean himself like cats like to do but I take the cone off for him to eat and spend quality time in my lap.

Since we also have 4 other animals (2 rescued dogs and 2 other rescued cats) I'm just trying to keep Mercury as comfortable as possible, watching for signs of distress and giving him as much quality time in my lap as possible.

~ Don't wait too late . Hard to find a vein on kitty cats when they get to far into leaving. If you can afford it having the veterinarian come to your home is best .

    Thank you.

Fortunately, my wife and I agree on our current treatment plan and don't need to rush into making a decision now.

We're currently keeping Mercury comfortable and just watching to see how he adjusts to life wearing a neck cone.

I genuinely appreciate your very kind offer.

And Mercury is a great name for a cat!

    Many thanks,

Mercury is far from wasting away and eating very well so we're in no rush.
As I've mentioned, we're just seeing how he adjusts to life wearing a neck cone since he'll reopen his wound if he scratches it.
Actually, we do have a vet that will come here if it appears that Mercury is experiencing more pain than pleasure.

    @Grau
I should not have said anything. Its just that I’ve let too beloved animals suffer for too long and I projected my guilt about that.

On second thoughts, I see your situation is different.

    I apologize.

There's absolutely no reason to apologize for anything.

I'm about 70 years old and have also made the mistake of waiting too long to have a suffering animal euthanized.

Each case is different and there are different ways in which an animal can suffer.

Mercury will tell me if and when it's time.

Thanks so much for your genuine concern.

Thanks for your response even though I'm not quite sure I understand you correctly and I couldn't find a definition for the word " incutubated".

At any rate, Mercury seems to be adjusting well to his new and more comfortable neck cone as long as I take it off for him to eat and to spend time in my lap. (about 10 times a day)
He is using the litter box, eating very well, doesn't seem to be stressed or agitated and is certainly in no pain so we're in no hurry to have him euthanized.

I want to thank you for your kind words and interest a few weeks ago concerning my old cat, Mercury.

Unfortunately, my wife and I had to have Mercury put to sleep (euthanized) last week as his cancerous wound was just getting worse and worse to the point that blood was running into his ear and he was very uncomfortable.

The wound was left over from where we had to have his left ear surgically removed in March of this year because of cancer. It had healed nicely and Mercury was truly enjoying himself until the cancer came back and he began to constantly scratch at the wound site so that it would bleed unless he wore his neck cone which he appeared to hate.

Long before we had to have Mercury euthanized, I made it a point to spend as much time as possible with Mercury in my lap so that he could take a break from his cone & wound irritation.

In retrospect, I feel like I did the right thing at the right time and acted in Mercury's best interest. At least that's what I tried to do.

I thought about your kind words and interest as I was dealing with Mercury's problems and as I was having him euthanized.

I simply wanted to thank you again for your genuine concern. At least now, I have more time to spend with our four other animals (2 cats and 2 dogs) and give them the attention that they need and deserve.

    Many thanks and best wishes,

    You did the right thing.
I let my dog and later my cat suffer for too long out of my own selfishness.
You made the right decision at the right time.

Sorry to hear about your poor cat. Are the other animals missing him?

When my cat died, my ex’s dog looked for her for weeks. Animals are painfully aware of loss!

Dogs especially think of themselves as members of a pack and they will give their lives to protect it without a second thought. So when my cat died my exes dog couldn’t figure out why part of the pack was gone. So they have to grieve silently and without explanation. People don’t get what special pain animals go through.

Thank you, it's very thoughtful of you to ask about poor old Mercury.
He was an affectionate old fellow who was more attracted to people than the other animals so, no, the other animals don't seem to be feeling any differently. If anything, I think that they resented all the time I was spending with Mercury and are glad he's gone.

Unfortunately, he developed cancer on his left ear which we had surgically removed. He did well until the cancer returned and a large wound developed where his ear was. We were told that the only remaining option was chemotherapy but because of Mercury's heart condition and other maladies, he probably wouldn't survive.

As things were, Mercury had to wear a neck cone to keep him from scratching the growing wound. Even though I would take the cone off 10 - 15 times a day to hold him, pet him, let him eat and use the litter box, the wound and neck cone were making him miserable so my wife & I took him to be euthanized on Wednesday (29 July). Fortunately or unfortunately, I was able to hold Mercury as he slowly and calmly drifted off.

I imagine that you probably know the feeling that you get in your throat when you're in the process of euthanizing an old, trusting and loving. companion.

If there's any up side to Mercury's death it's that I appreciate our other 2 cats and 2 dogs and am grateful for their being as healthy as they are.

I genuinely appreciate your interest and wish you and yours the best of health.

Always. We had a situation, though. about two years ago. Our Nimbus was very, very sick. The other cats knew. The stayed away from him and were generally on edge. About three days after we put him down, the entire dynamic of the cat trio changed. It was a sight to see. They have so much more instinct than they get credit for.

Yes, it’s very hard to keep patting them and saying “good boy” and trying to keep calm and comforting them as the vet does his duty.
