Um think globally, not locally. We don't have that many registered Dems on this planet and registered Dems and their families in America are not supposed to take the entire hit for everyone else in Asia, Africa, North and South America and Europe that continues to exploit resources.

Living with a writer you learn to appreciate that they are astute observers of all aspects of humanity. They see things from a different perspective that is very much akin to Critical Thinking albeit for a different purpose. There is another aspect about writing which is called "write what you know about".

In the section you selected Orwell was describing his own personal observations about someone and included it in the book as the means to convey the message that he was trying to get across about the mindless manipulative songs. By including his personal experience he added authenticity to the message by making it relatable. Who among us has not known an older female relative who we admired for her strength and caught a glimpse of what she must have been like as a younger woman?

I do not recall ever being directly taught Critical Thinking Skills while in school. I suspect that I began to teach them to myself during those long walks home from school with only my own thoughts to keep me company. I was not very good at them but I honed them quickly when I began working in IT. Then out of self interest I expanded my Critical Thinking into other aspects of my life.

TBH I don't know how I would go about teaching a Critical Thinking class since I have never faced that challenge. After teaching it I can imagine it must have been frustrating to have to stop doing it knowing that it is an essential life skill. Unfortunately our education system has been perverted by the same mindless "end results" myopia that drives the GREED obsessed Wall Street Casino Banksters. One of my friends once observed that my education came from all of the books that I read that were never on any school curriculum. In the 4th grade I was already reading at an 8th grade level and I started school a year earlier than I was supposed to and graduated HS shortly after turning 17.

You must have been out that day. Public schools don't encourage critical thinking and haven't for a long time. They're more inclined to tell you what to think and don't really want you to know how to think. Critical thinking is about seeing things in three dimensions and being able to draw from that unbiased conclusions. If you are a product of public education your brain was rewired and your biases are one dimensional.
