The charitable religious principle that has existed for hundreds of years says that each of us is "his neighbor's keeper" -- and that therefore each of us must pay to "keep" those who don't pay their own way in life. I understand that viewpoint.

BUT, and our atheist friends are especially good at reminding us of this -- the United States is not founded on the precepts of ANY religion; moreover, the establishment of a 'state religion' is expressly forbidden in the Constitution!

Taking care of those unfortunate fellow American citizens who, because of dreadful diseases, birth defects, terrible accidents, etc., cannot (CANNOT) support themselves, is something that I would support voluntarily on purely humanitarian grounds, but not constitutional ones....

The Founding Fathers were revolutionaries who thought the Constitution would have been rewritten many times before now.

Rather than carrying on about "wrap-around handout welfare system" (whatever that means), I suggest coming up with how things should work when in a couple of decades a lot of employees will be replaced by the application of artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and high-speed wireless communications.

Still, it is true that such 'mechanisms' don't exist in the Constitution... so, if government is going to be involved (almost a certainty), it should be done through the well-used method of amending the Constitution.

In fact, it's not well-used and SCOTUS has dealt with our political dysfunction by turning the Constitution into a "living document." Can you imagine trying to amend the Constitution today with people fighting over gun rights and abortion, just to name two items on wish lists? The truth is Americans support people having guns and abortion. True Believers trying to ban one or the other would no doubt feel compelled to keep at it.

People can't even define what makes a rifle an assault weapon, but they want to ban assault rifles.
People don't know that barely anyone is killed with AR-15s but they sure do look scary and that's the important thing.
People want to ban people with mental health issues from owning a gun, but they also don't know how to enforce that law without breaking Hippaa laws.
