    I agree. But not to the right (especially the Trump right). To them "socialism" is everything they disagree with.

    No. It's not socialism at all. It's taxation and spending.

    Everybody welcomes discussions on taxation and spending. Calling it "socialism" ends any such discussions before they begin.

    None of the things Mr Truman was quoted as saying above qualify as socialism. They qualify as government programs. Socialism at its worst is government owned businesses and a one party system. The left is working on it but has a long way to go.

    But at the time there were people who called those things socialism...which was his point.
    Specifically how is the Left working on govt owning businesses? And walk me through how you think the left can get around checks and balances to get a one party system?

    Socialism used to be a word the overwhelming majority of people feared. Because it's a shitty system.

    And even as we push more socialist concepts, those who support them will be the first to scream "you don't know what socialism is"

    Then they re-name their platform as "Democratic Socialism" which apparently makes a difference? It doesn't.

    It's all stepping stones and degrees of a failed system.

    Memes are great. Why think for ones self when it has already been done for you. Remember the Occupy movement where protesters on one side of the park had nice tents, Ipads, and lived comfortably while the poor protesters had to stay on their own side of the park. (The sexual assault section!)

    I guess their memes are still floating around.
