One must keep in mind McCarthy assumed his leadership position because Paul 'Lyin' Ryan wasn't crazy enough for the Repub caucus in the House. He's proving his nutbag bona fides more and more these days.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) is threatening his members that if they accept an offer from Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to sit on a new select committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol attack, he will remove them from their other committee assignments.
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/poli...live-updates/#link-3ZMLIODERBDC5ACKTF7L25OLRI

Repubs aren't bothering to hide their duplicity any more. Given the opportunity to share power equally with Dems on a Jan. 6 commission they've chosen to paint it as a partisan exercise. Likely because they know it will not cast the Orange Messiah, who they believe they need to take back the House, in a good light.

And then there's Kevin's move to metaphorically get in bed with a bald faced liar, the right wing propagandist Tucker Carlson.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) on Wednesday tasked Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), the senior Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, to investigate the National Security Agency, after the agency bluntly denied allegations by Fox New host Tucker Carlson that it has been spying on him in a conspiracy to get him kicked off the air.
    https://talkingpointsmemo.com/news/mccarthy-nunes-investigation-tucker-carlson-nsa

“Now, there is a public report that NSA read the emails of Fox News host Tucker Carlson,” McCarthy said. “Although NSA publicly denied targeting Carlson, I have serious questions regarding this matter that must be answered.”

By "public report" I assume he means Carlson's baseless accusation. He even modeled his suggestive tone after Tucker, claiming answers must be given based on NOTHING.

With leadership like McCarthy's and McConnell's is it any wonder why the POT has taken its distinctively anti-democratic turn?

Oh no! A politician is using political power? I didn't think that ever happened. ;)

The ability to exercise power and its legitimate use are two separate things. He's trying to keep Pelosi from naming Repubs interested in learning the truth about 01/06. It's disloyal to the country and therefore nothing new from a Repub.

The commission isn’t about finding the truth or Pelosi wouldn’t want it. It’s about playing a blame game.

    Dumb. He already stripped Cheney.

    Cheney named to select committee.

Good for Liz for accepting a position on the committee. She has cast her fate with loyalty to the Constitution which immediately puts her at odds with the POT.

Republicans say they are for political freedoms but once you go against the party line, they will strip you of committee assignments.

    Cheney's statement:

Cheney: I’m Honored To Serve On The January 6th Select Committee; Our Oath To The Constitution Must Be Above Partisan Politics | Congresswoman Liz Cheney (house.gov)

“I’m honored to have been named to serve on the January 6th select committee. Congress is obligated to conduct a full investigation of the most serious attack on our Capitol since 1814. That day saw the most sacred space in our Republic overrun by an angry and violent mob attempting to stop the counting of electoral votes and threatening the peaceful transfer of power.

“What happened on January 6th can never happen again. Those who are responsible for the attack need to be held accountable and this select committee will fulfill that responsibility in a professional, expeditious, and non-partisan manner.

“Our oath to the Constitution, our commitment to the rule of law, and the preservation of the peaceful transfer of power must always be above partisan politics.”

She's far too right wing for my vote based on policy, but I like her. I'd vote for her based on character over many possible Democrats.

It is just a matter of perspective. She is way too liberal for me although I respect her consistency of position.

Republicans just refuse to govern. Their one and only objective when in power is to get themselves re-elected.

Liz Cheney is way too liberal for you? Wow! How far to the right can extremism on the right wing go?

I mean... she's so far right she even threw her own sister under the bus for being gay. Not even her dad went to that extreme.

    I certainly agree with that.

I certainly disagree with that. He is trying to prevent another politician from using political power contrary to his position. We all know that congressional investigations are as accurate, useful and meaningful as rocks in many cases. Remember Russia collusion and Benghazi or the recent New York investigations of Trump? Politically motivated investigation is as difficult as trying to catch a neutrino.

What does this "Select Committee" expect to find that the FBI won't find?

Pretty far. I, for instance, am what you would call a right wing nut job because I support reorganizing government in America to remove most of federal government's power. I hate politics (while finding it entertaining) and consider voting a waste of time.

Is there not a singe liberal homophobe? Are you sure?

Nothing. It expects to make a three ring circus to help advertise its position to the public. Have we forgotten Russia collusion, the ultimate three ring circus?

Exactly. It's all about making a political spectacle to distract voters from the horrible job Biden and Congresional Democrats are doing. It's to distract from the CRT controversy, which is a losing issue for Democrats.

Nothing. These committees (clown shows) never accomplish anything except creating sound bites for the media.

If they subpoena Trump it could be a double edge sword for democrats.
