    Right, because of cloture.
    1. Senate wants to vote to un-censure President Jackson, but Sen. Joey won't shut up. Initially they had no recourse. That is a filibuster. Senate was shut down until they gave up on the bill.
    2. 1919 Woodrow Wilson wanted to arm Merchant ships and Sen Joey wouldn't shut up. In the interim, cloture had been developed which would have allowed the vote to occur if 2/3rds of the voting senators agreed that Joey should shut up.
    3. Now 3/5ths of the sworn Senators are able to tell Joey to shut up so they can vote.
Eliminating cloture allows a minority to shut down the Senate, is that what he wants?

That's how the filibuster SHOULD work. Not like today in which any senator just... saying... they want to filibuster, that's enough to stop the Senate. It's insane and it only benefits Republicans who, in the last decade, have done nothing but obstruct.

I'd settle for more obstructing, but I'd prefer a whole lot of undoing...

    Thats interesting considering:

“During Donald Trump’s presidency, the Senate GOP has held roll call votes to break a filibuster and end debate on nominees 314 times. All previous presidents combined faced 244 roll call votes.”

Let us know when the Republicans break 300 times. Cause you got a LONG ways to go

BTW we didn’t change the filibuster rules when you folks used it a GROSSLY ABSURD number of times during trumps tenure. So suck it up cause you all sure didn’t seem to have a problem with the modern filibuster then.

Now feed us some more of that bullshit about how the republicans are the only ones who have benefitted from the filibuster in the last decade.

Remember what I told you about how democrats act? If they’re accusing you of something, it’s a certainty that they’re doing that thing they’re accusing you of.

Filibuster is a perfect example. The Dems used the modern filibuster against trump 50 more times than ALL PREVIOUS PRESIDENTS COMBINED. And now they want to change the rules because the republicans are doing the EXACT same thing they did but to a lesser degree.

How disingenuous! Filibusters didn't REQUIRE a roll call.

You want to compare how many times the democrats have sustained a filibuster motion as compared to the republicans? I’ll bet you don’t.

I do not know how Biden can look at himself in the mirror given his defense of the filibuster in the past. One can change one's mind, sure, but that's not what's going on here. Now it's: "We'll lose our democracy!" Can't he at least be sheepish about his duplicity?

Also, how is it "a minority" that is stopping voting rights? That's moronic on a couple of levels.

Yes, we should only use it when a Democratic initiative is threatened.

You can fault Harry Reid for not wanting to waste the Senate's time on roll calls or motions when he knew a filibuster would succeed. I faulted him many times too. I would have made the SOBs come to the floor and vote on it! I would have loved to see Republicans have to VOTE and be on record every time they opposed healthcare, civil rights, voters' rights, women's rights, or when they made life easier for mass shooters... But I do realize that those are tactics that obstructionists use. Not lawmakers who want to get things done.

And if your post is not disingenuous, then it's worse than I thought.

Bills should pass by a simple majority. The filibuster has become a tool used by the minority party to prevent a vote on legislation. Elections are supposed to have consequences regardless of how large or small a majority is.

Let either party have the ability to pass bills and get a signature from POTUS.

If the next administration comes into power with a congressional majority and chooses to reverse the legislation, by all means do so…

It’s not good for a country like the US to have radical shifts in their direction every time a majority party changes in the US.
By all means, let’s scrap it. I already mentioned that Trump himself wanted to kill the filibuster. All I’m saying - be careful what you wish for.

That’s one interpretation. Another is if the majority of the people support the legislation it gets to stay. If they find it abhorrent, it gets removed. Not saying you are wrong, but I see a win/win.

Uh no the whole purpose of the filibuster is to prevent a bare majority or in this case no majority at all from shoving controversial Bills down the country's throat.

Biden calls for changing Senate rules to allow voting bills to pass
Biden has been a long strong supporter of the filibuster for all his years in the senate. Just months ago he claimed getting rid of the filibuster would “throw the entire Congress into chaos. Wonder why the change of heart [a satirical rhetorical question...]

    OLD MAN YELLS AT CLOUD:

A confused irrational "Biden, appearing to admit defeat on ending the filibuster & nationalizing elections, randomly starts shouting: States’ voter reform laws are “about who gets to count the votes! Count the vote! Count the vote!”"

    ===========================================================

“What a great day! Biden loses in USSC, get panned on his GA speech and Sinema torpedoes the election bill.”
