The media, in this case, seem to be the at the far end of the autistic spectrum.

First, they claim that the girl is a student at an elite private school. Then, we're told that a non-verbal student - an autistic person who can't speak at all - is "exceptionally bright". We're left wondering how, and why, would an elite private school brand a non-verbal autistic student "exceptionally bright". Other sources mention that she's not the only student with some kind of psychological issues in this elite school. Is the elite school really a school for kids with special needs? The word "elite" suggests that their students are highly intelligent, which in turn suggests that they are not autistic, or on the spectrum, but normative children with normative cognitive abilities. My guess is that this is a special school for students with learning disabilities.

We learn from the rather untrustworthy media that this girl does not speak during school hours, which made me wonder whether the term "non verbal student" hasn't been improperly used in this case. "Non verbal" (NVLD) - as opposed to "non verbal student" - is a learning disability, a neurological condition.

My guess is that identifying as a cat is this girl's way to go around her lack of social skills, her way to cope with a threatening world. Who doesn't like cats?

Is it possible you're wrong? Or is it just everybody else who is wrong and they just need to accept your opinion?

Sometimes kids like to pretend to be animals, man. It’s fun.

I confess that I myself once went to a Star Trek convention dressed as a Tribble with a China plate glued to my arse

I was “Big Tribble in little China” :p

Not very funny humour though since you are targeting someone who has a disability

It was inevitable. I wonder how long it will be before some woman wants her marriage to her dog recognized.

I don't think autism was mentioned. Could be.

Just to clarify, it is actually very common to have children with significantly underdeveloped verbal skills, including verbal IQ (i.e. language disorder) to have normal or even above average intelligence & ability for nonverbal tasks. Sadly, they can be written off as having learning issues. Or their verbal deficit may not be noticed.

I know this because one of my first psychology gigs was to assess them. Schools get a quota of funding for each child with such a condition and it also facilitates the provision of assistance for the child during high school years and for their exams at the end of highschool (E.g. extra time during examinations). But the paper trail must start early.

Nice that kids can still be kids in Australia. In US this kind of thing is being criminalized.

Well, as long as it doesn’t involve hormones and surgery, I’m cool with it.

It wasn't, but it's somehow implied in the term non-verbal student. This is what most posters here thought, which shows that the journalists should have done a bit of research instead of writing such sloppy articles.

I'm well aware of the levels of intelligence among children with learning disabilities. I'm also well aware of the stigma. I've met psychologists and other professionals who were not able to distinguish between cause and effect, insisting that the disabilities were the result of emotional traumas, leading parents to blame themselves and leaving children without proper treatment until it was too late.

We have an extensive network of public and private schools for special needs children and teenagers. The system isn't perfect, but it works for most kids and their parents. This is why the description of that elite school in Melbourne seemed familiar enough to guess that it's a school for kids with special needs.

Sure. Anytime you can show I’m how I’m wrong with objective fact I’ll accept that. You know like genetic evidence this person is actually a cat and not a human.

    Your turn.

Maybe we should turn schools into zoos to appease the left and let kids be kids. makes sense in the mind of the radical left.

A sad truth. We're past being able to save ourselves, even under what would be considered by other cultures/eras incredible wealth, ease, and safety.

That's exactly the attitude which has brought us so much grief.

Considering hardship a great insult and impost. A slight against a people who consider themselves elevated beyond the awfulness of peasantry.

But then they'll say kids don't like fences. Little Johnny being killed by a passing truck within five minutes of running out the gates is a small price to pay to honour they's wishes.

No doubt. We are beyond weak. Western civilization in general. Our ancestors would hang in their heads in shame. We have all the creature comforts, yet we are laughably pathetic. Look at us. We can’t even differentiate between genders anymore. Meanwhile, our ancestors were breaking their backs with no AC, no heat, no electricity, no phones, no squat.

We've become too precious to tolerate even the least discomfort. We regard it as a grave insult .. beyond the pale.

The East has chosen their moment well. All they had to do was watch and wait. They saw us eating ourselves alive, and knew it wouldn't be long.
