And every 8 year old would love to have ice cream and cake for breakfast, lunch and dinner. A good parent doesn't capitulate to the whims of an 8 year old. Coddling such adolescence only leads to more and more out of control society.

So, we are developing Crazy Cat Ladies much earlier than in the past. Nice.

Is she hurting anyone ?is she hurting you? No but she is more likely to stop trusting those who care for her everyday, she will react in away that is detrimental to her understanding of things , the more she trusts those around her the more she will learn that she is not a cat, I have support workers that I trust because we have built up a relationship of trust if they were to break it they wouldn't be trusted to look after me, the same is with this girl, she for her self will in the end up learning that she is human, but it takes care and time

World has many crazy cat ladies. A few more won't hurt anyone. Once someone decides they want to be defined as the Devil or a Great White Shark or a Mountain Lion, I may become a little concerned.

Wierd, but it is a private school. Seems she needs more help than just a cat companion.

I wonder if where it goes really matters. I'd rather see people identify as cats than neo-Nazis or the like.

Am I the only one who thinks there are far too many idiots on this thread making wild claims and reaching all sorts of different conclusions about an innocent child on the basis of a couple of alleged partial quotes from a single third-hand source in a trashy tabloid? I doubt any of us would be qualified to diagnose the girl even with a full consultation so anyone believing they can give any kind of meaningful insight in to her specific situation on the basis of this article alone is totally irrational.

Ha. Yes, all we know is that she's "non-verbal", seemingly bright otherwise. They haven't quantified the amount of impairment nor listed any of the cognitive measuring tools.

We have strict confidentiality laws in australia, so we probably wouldn't learn much more anyway.

I agree that she will do better in a supportive environment... But some here would advocate for her being exposed to harsher realities.

I suspect they are resentful armchair Darwinists in disguise.

Trump taught the world that narcissism and entitlement will get you what you everything and nothing anyone can do about it

That's not how psychology works. Being supportive does not mean condoning behavior that masks or ignores her choice of reactionary positions. Allowing her to hide from her problems by creating an alternate reality is contrary to helping her deal with the actual cause of her problems. How about trying to solve her problem, not treating her like a pet?

The girl has been identified as very bright and non verbal. Not sure if she has also been identified as being on the spectrum. Taking into account these facts, I honestly don't see why this is a problem if it allows for her continued learning and poses no disruption for the class. Being 'non verbal', we don't know for sure that she 'identifies herself as a cat', but we know she is much more comfortable being acknowledged as one. Again, if this helps her, I see no problem.

Not sure how one can identify as a cat when they cannot lick their own butthole. Maybe there is a corrective trans gender surgery for kids to do that as well.

I wasn't advocating for any of that...as a psychologist I was simply suggesting give it as much as attention needed, no more...

I prefer to focus on other things like helping her understand within herself what she perceives as leading a rich and meaningful life. And explore in a supportive environment how to move towards that.

Until such time as she has to interact with her peers who have not been " briefed " by the adults around them

can her parents have her spayed so as to end that line of idiocy, without any governmental repercussions?

My only point of contention would be that the US is not in the way, as they (world wide) are behind by quite a bit.
    Thanks for the post!
Unless, that is, that you Australians are indoctrinating your children to be household pets...........................
