Were they really? the media made a big deal about his German heritage? I have a feeling whatever story you are talking about got more coverage in right wing media than any meaningful left wing media.

I recall them making fun of the fact that his family name was changed from Drumpf, after Trump had made a comment about someone else's (maybe John Stewart) last name being changed.

Can you quote any of these articles saying anything about Nazis? Trump's grandfather moved here in the 1880s. The only time I've heard of any "Nazi connections" with Trump from the left was when it came to him reading Nazi literature.

 

Nazi was an abbreviation for the National Socialist German Workers' Party, and no way would Trump be associated with socialism.

 

Nazis abandoned socialism after Hitler took over and drove the socialists out. And I don't argue that Trump is or would have been a Nazi.

Lots of those voters will be descendants of slavers as well though. I don't think anyone has considered that a factor in voting. It'd be taking the whole "sins of the father" thing to an even more ridiculous extent.

No, it was a joke. I suspect Rueters' primary motive would be, like most commercial media, get readers, though I think there was also a credible element in trying to use this as a way to get people to think about how recent and ubiquitous slavery in the US was (though I'm not surprised partisan politics drowned out anything meaningful).

 

Wait . . . did Reuters even check for slaveholders outside the US or did they only look at slaveholders within the US? It seems like they are only looking at the descendants of AMERICAN slaveholders, but I could be wrong.

Only Americans responsible for everything, so any Democrat politician should transfer their wealth to black people.

 

All it means is he's descended from immigrants who came after slavery. So the real irony is that the most anti-immigrant president is a descendent of more recent immigrants.
