In January 2023, 24 Republican legislators in the US state of South Carolina sponsored the South Carolina Equal Protection Act of 2023, a bill designed to extend constitutional rights to embryos and fetuses at all stages of development, granting them equality with women already born. The bill makes women and pregnant people who undergo abortion subject to the state’s homicide laws and punishments, including the death penalty.

As of late 2023, legislative proposals in Missouri have been made to authorize murder charges against women who obtain abortions. Two bills pre-filed in the Missouri legislature, known as the "Abolition of Abortion in Missouri Act," have been sponsored to extend criminal and civil laws protecting those already born to the unborn, effectively categorizing abortions as murder.

Additionally, there have been efforts in other states, such as Kentucky and Louisiana, to introduce similar legislation. In Kentucky, a bill was introduced that would apply homicide charges to illegal abortions, but it faced opposition even from within the anti-abortion movement, including the state's Republican attorney general. Similarly, in Louisiana, a bill was introduced granting fetal personhood and declaring abortion homicide, but it was quickly pulled due to lack of support from within the anti-abortion movement. These instances highlight ongoing attempts in various states to criminalize abortion to varying degrees, though such efforts often face significant internal and external challenges.

So, Republicans, you can expect Democrats to dutifully hang this monstrous albatross ever so uncomfortably around your party's necks come 2024.

    Cya at the ballot,

Didn't we all know that the zealots wouldn't stop after dismantling Roe vs. Wade? Rather, it was just the first step....

Yep, and the fact this sort of thing is happening at all is a reminder of how radicalized the GOP has become.

Of course, it is only necessary to spend the briefest time lisening to GOP supporters to understand why. Those who don't openly support such insanity refuse to condemn it. The people who propose such things know that the ywil lnot suffer any consequences because the people who vote for them either agree wiht them or won't punish them for their extremism.

I predicted some time ago that this was heading toward proposals for the state to monitor and effectively take control of the lives of pregnant women. No reason to change my view on that. If it isn't already happening it soon will be. Perhaps such laws will never get passed or will die in the courts, but the fanatics will keep pushing.

Antiabortion stances have put a few nails in some coffins, meaning eliminated some GOP’s from being voted into office. But… their stance is not law until/unless ratified. Have some faith that out of line punishments will not be allowed.

I went through the links and have not been able to find the precise words which say that abortion is a capital offense.

The fact that anti-abortionists are opposing these kind of laws is quite telling.

    https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/po...bject-women-abortions-death-penalty-rcna75060

The South Carolina Prenatal Equal Protection Act would "ensure that an unborn child who is a victim of homicide is afforded equal protection under the homicide laws of the state." The bill would define a "person" as an "unborn child at every stage of development from fertilization until birth."

Under South Carolina law, people convicted of murder can face the death penalty or a minimum of 30 years in prison.

Now, you can argue no one is going to get the death penalty, but the bill does not give that qualification. Even 30 years in prison is wrong. Any time is wrong. Making it a crime with punishment is wrong.

    Wrong is wrong.

Don't get pregnant and don't kill the baby, if you do.

Some don't seem to be aware that contraception isn't 100%. In other words, even when trying to do the right thing in preventing pregnancy it can still happen. Should those people be forced to have a baby?

I say use this in the elections for 2024 from President all the way down to State Representative no matter who is running as a GOP. Massive ad blitz from everything on the TV, Radio, Internet, and Social Media when possible. But do this only during the general election campaign.

Woman should use the power of their votes to make sure this never happens.

    Women will get pregnant.

Preaching about it doesn't do squat.

Laws should be based on how people are in the real world, not how you wish them to be.

Oh I know there are likely many anti-choicers who feel that way. Was just curious if any of them had the guts to admit it.

Ironic that prolife would be pro-death. Perhaps Reps feel they have some wiggle room.

After the 1st trimester, absolutely they should be forced to have a baby unless there is a serious risk to the health of the mother.

Sex carries with it great responsibility. Mothers have to bear them, fathers have to fund them. They don’t like it, they best watch where they stick their genitals

Should be allowed to get an abortion up to 21 weeks. A fetus isn’t viable outside the womb up to 21 weeks. After 21 weeks it should only be allowed if fetus becomes non-viable or mother's life at risk.

People will kill themselves with fentanyl. Preaching about it doesn't do squat. At least they are killing themselves rather than killing someone else.
