Vermont has ideal weather conditions for eclipse viewing today

From CNN Meteorologist Derek Van Dam

Snow-capped mountain vistas, fresh snow and blues skies: That's the stunning setting for the out-of-this-world treat eclipse watchers will receive today across northern Vermont.

The area is one of the lucky few spots with perfect weather conditions to see the eclipse.

Conditions in Stowe are brilliant and couldn't be more ideal for what is about to be Mother Nature's finest moment. Temperatures are warm and people will need sunscreen — that is, until totality obscures the sun from view.

NASA will launch sounding rockets into the path of the eclipse
    From CNN's Ashley Strickland

Three sounding rockets will launch from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility on April 8 to study the eclipse. Allison Stancil/NASA

Observing the sun during eclipses helps scientists better understand how solar material flows from the sun.

Charged particles known as plasma create space weather that interacts with an upper layer of Earth’s atmosphere, called the ionosphere. Many low-Earth orbit satellites and radio waves operate in the ionosphere, which means dynamic space weather has an impact on GPS and long-distance radio communications.

Three sounding rockets will lift off in succession from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia before, during and after the eclipse to measure how the sudden disappearance of sunlight impacts Earth’s upper atmosphere.

Each rocket will eject four soda bottle-size scientific instruments within the path of totality to measure changes in the ionosphere’s temperature, particle density, and electric and magnetic fields.

The sounding rockets will reach a maximum altitude of 260 miles (420 kilometers) during flight.'

We know decades ahead of time when eclipses arrive, but poor MTG thinks its a sign from god which just came from nowhere.

According to the gal who claimed that Jewish space lasers were the cause of the California wildfires.,,LOL
Jesus also spoke about the ravenous wolves Marge.

“Many have mocked and scoffed at this post and even put community notes,”
Ms. Greene, Georgia Republican, wrote on social media.
“Jesus talked about that in Luke 12:54-56.”

    Interpreting the Times

54 He said to the crowd: “When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, ‘It’s going to rain,’ and it does.

55 And when the south wind blows, you say, ‘It’s going to be hot,’ and it is.

56 Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don’t know how to interpret this present time?

Good for her. Am I somehow responsible for her words and beliefs?

@3:14 it began here in Vt.. no image yet.
@ 3:38 you can see the black image covering about I/8 of the bottom of the sun.
    It's very defined and black.
Lots of tourists here in my Southern Vermont town.

'A Brief History of Eclipse Glasses and the People Who Forgot to Wear Them'

    snip:

"There’s even a legend that Isaac Newton himself attempted to watch an eclipse through a mirror and ended up blinding himself for three days. He suffered months of after-images, but eventually his vision recovered.
Newton perhaps should have known better—scientists who lived before he did figured out how to safely view an eclipse—and it wasn’t through a mirror.

In the fourth century, Aristotle revealed how he watched the eclipse in his writings, contemplating how light bends during the events—“Why is it that an eclipse of the sun, if one looks at it through a sieve or through leaves … the rays are crescent-shaped where they reach the earth?”—outing leaves and pasta colanders as his preferred methods for eclipse viewing. While watching the shadows of an eclipse pass through another object would have protected his eyes, it wouldn’t necessarily have been the best show. A better version of this idea came 600 years later when Ibn al-Haytham, an Egyptian scientist, used the first pinhole camera, also known as a “camera obscura,” to view the eclipse as safely as we do today. These cameras project the image of the eclipse onto a viewing screen so people don’t have to stare directly at the sun to see the show.

But as Aristotle’s teacher taught every freshman philosophy class, seeing the shadow of a thing isn’t seeing the thing itself. And thus more direct means of viewing were born. In what was the first telescopic viewing of a full solar eclipse, King Louis XIV of France covered his telescope’s objective lens with a piece of smoked glass to dilute the harmful light. This method remained popular through the early 19th century. By 1932, smoked glass had started falling out of favor. Steve Ruskin, Ph.D. from Notre Dame and author of America’s First Great Eclipse, told me it was then that products like the “Eclipse-o-scope,” eyeglasses with protective film covering the eyeholes, came to market, claiming to provide enough protection to look directly into the sun.

,Neither smoked glass nor the Eclipse-o-scope were actually fail-proof though'.

I’m in the path of totality here in Maine. Totality hits in about 30 minutes.

this small town is very crowded today!

'In Maine, the eclipse will begin at 2:22 p.m. EDT, with totality beginning at 3:32 p.m. EDT and ending at 3:34 p.m. EDT. The eclipse will exit through Newfoundland, Canada at 5:16 p.m. NDT.9 hours ago

    I'm in Southern Vermont.
    We're getting 96%.

/On April 8, 2024 at 2:14 p.m., a partial solar eclipse will begin, and at 3:26 p.m., a total eclipse will darken Vermont’s daytime sky, lasting about 3 minutes. The phenomenon will continue as a partial eclipse until 4:37 p.m.

It just became noticeably darker, outside and inside.
Sun is about 3/4 covered by shadow.

I traveled up to Houlton, ME. It’s pretty close to the center of the path. A lot of people drove and flew on here. I guess they had a 4 day festival here.

Now it looks like a sliver of a New Moon.
My eyes are seeing a square shaped translucent dot (lol) on my screen about the size of a dime.

The little martians living on the dark side of the moon must have been shocked by all the sunlight they got today.

Here is Central TX was a heavenly parting of the clouds. Hour of partial eclipse was obstructed with only occasional passing hole in the clouds giving brief clear views. And then last few minutes of partial eclipse came into clear view and 4 1/2 minutes of totality was perfectly clear. I was on the chase lounge, on the back porch, stoned with "Eclipse" from Pink Floyds "Dark Side of the Moon" playing on the headphones. Enough for even this atheist to feel truly blessed by god.

Prolly not. Its been theorized that life only exists cuz of the tital forces of the moon churning up the oceans. Also the moon is a pretty good magnet for both asteroids and harmful solar radiation.

And then theres the theory that the moon is hollow (mostly based on some anomolous seismic readings recorded when we deliberately jammed a lander into it.)

Personally I find the moon to be more mysterious than coincidental. But thats party just because of what we dont know about it yet.

Thats a misnomer. Both sides get sunlight everyday. "Dark side" refers to the side we never see from Earth.

FOX News comments on the eclipse: ""Fox News alert! A rare celestial event collides with a policy failure on the ground. The southern border is directly in the path of totality today when the moon covers the sun" - Dana Perino said during Monday's broadcast of America's Newsroom.

They just can't help themselves :D
