Are Facebook, Instagram and YouTube more like newspaper publishers or telephone companies?

The Supreme Court on Monday was wrestling with that question in a pair of cases being called the most important tests of the First Amendment in the internet era.

The justices' answer could be critical to setting the terms of online speech for generations.

So? What's the answer? Are they publishers? Or are they like phone companies?

If they're like phone companies then they shouldn't be able to censor viewpoints that they disagree with.

If they are publishers then they should be able to be sued just like any other publisher.

Free Speech, they are doing it wrong. The solution for bad speech is MORE free speech, not the abridging of our fundamental free speech rights.

Pro-Palestinian protests grew Thursday at California colleges and universities, including a new encampment at UCLA that drew a crowd of counterprotesters and teach-in at UC Santa Barbara, a day after police in riot gear arrested 93 protesters at USC.

Fallout over the Israel-Hamas war grew Thursday as USC announced that it would cancel its main-stage commencement ceremony after more than a week of national controversy over its decision to pull a pro-Palestinian valedictorian's speaking slot from the May event that was expected to draw 65,000 attendees.

The university cited new safety measures, saying that the "time needed to process the large number of guests coming to campus will increase substantially.”
