Obama Bypasses Senate, Installs New Consumer Chief

By Ben Feller and Jim Kuhnenn | Associated Press | 01//04/2012

SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio (AP) – “President Barack Obama says he won't take "no" as an answer from Republicans, so he's going around them to appoint the head of a new consumer protection agency.

Obama says Republicans would just keep holding Richard Cordray's nomination hostage - and the president says that's inexcusable and wrong.

He says Cordray must be in place in order for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to start helping consumers deal with unscrupulous mortgage companies, dishonest payday lenders, and others.

Obama announced the appointment of Cordray during a stop Wednesday in Ohio, where Cordray once served as attorney general.

Republicans are outraged but Obama says he has an obligation to act when Congress refuses to.

The recess appointment means Cordray stands to serve for at least the next two years."

    .......

Excellent decision. This is the alternative that ex president GW Bush used to circumvent any problems that may have arisen with the Dems and republicans, as in his personal decision to invade Iraq despite the absence of WMD’s. He precipitously announced the invasion of Iraq anyway. In order to stop wasting time and the taxpayers’ money, President Obama made the decision for them.

I would think that the republicans/T-baggers were now smart enough to see that constant obstruction, whining, adding amendments onto other bills, holding important bills hostage to get what they wanted done, was now working against them. Their agenda is gone, their popularity gone, and the chance of them being re-elected has long been down the toilet.

With Obama’s tendency to weigh each portion of a decision and settle for negotiation first and foremost, he must have decided some time in the recent past that there is indeed NO NEGOTIATION with the Congress now in session. BOOLYEAH!!!

Good....there is enough gridlock in Washington. Those politicans need to get busy creating an environment that creates jobs.

But no....Republicans want to spend time with futile and inconsequential fights that end up taking up all the time that legislators should use to be working for a living.

Is fihgting this guy just for the sake of fighting it productive?....the consumer protection agency?...really???....

Yay! Obama wipes his ass with the Constitution again! All hail our benevolent dictator!

And Bush went to Congress for approval to go into Iraq, by the way. You are either wrong or just lying. Obama was the one who did not obtain approval from Congress in Libya.

So the guy who pledged to honor and defend the Constitution doesn't have to follow it and the laws it governs? Go King Obama...

I'm am glad you approve of this type of governing. Of course this will also give President Santorum the same privilege when he arrives in Washington. All the dictating Obama is doing, foregoing his Constitutional authority only allows it for the next administration! Disgusting that some will approve of dictatorial powers in the U.S. Just hope you appreciate it enough to extend it to any and all other Presidents!!!

They all should Goldwater. The fact there is apathy towards total and blatant disregard to the pledges they make should offend us all. This the same guy that preached 'rule of law' on the campaign trail, why do accept such hypocrisy?

How exactly is exercising a Constitutional power wiping one's ass with the Constitution?

I'd love to hear this one. I'm fascinated by the deranged and deluded reality that the cons have constructed around themselves.

Do you even know what this new agency is? They were not fighting it just to fight it; they did their duty under the Constitution and voted on this guy. He was rejected by the Senate. Since Obama did not get his way he did an "end around", as the media paints it, and appointed this guy.

Here is the problem. The Senate is still technically in session. So this is not a "recess appointment" as it is being portrayed, but a huge power grab by the administration. If Congress had any balls, they would refuse to pay this guy’s salary.

That's what I'm sayin, algranny. They don't realize they're opening a whole new can of worms the next president will be able to take full advantage of. You watch, they'll be squealing like stuck pigs when the shoes on a Republican's foot. ;)

It seems you liberals have exceedingly short memories. Have you completely forgotten that the democrats held a filibuster-proof majority in the senate along with control of the house and the White House? How long did that last? Let me answer my own question, because I'll bet you probably don't even know. It lasted as long as the to when the next election was held when the people of the United States ended that strangle-hold on the government, because they did not like what the democrats were up to. If that wasn't the case then the Republicans would not have been handed back control of the house. It is that simple. The people don't like Obama's socialist agenda to the point where it is very likely that the democrats will lose control of the senate this time around.

This childish idea that you liberals seem to have that the Republicans should sign off on whatever the democrats come up with is absurd. The democrats had their chance and the people didn't like it at all. The Republicans were voted into office to stop what was happening. Are you liberals really so simple-minded as to think that the democrats have solutions? They had their chance to create the millions of green jobs they promised. You liberals were convinced that was going to happen. Health care reform was supposed to create millions of jobs too, 400,000 almost immediately. You liberals bought into that lie as well.

So you think that somehow, these same dishonest democrat politicians have ideas that are going to work? You have to be really gullible to think that after these same politicians have failed to produce any of the results they have promised on the legislation they already have pushed through.

Wait for the Republicans to get off the golf course? Do you have any idea how much time Obama spends playing golf? What is wrong with you?

    ......

    1) Bush got away with it...why are you chastising Obama for doing the same thing? GW Bush wiped EVERYONE'S AZZ with his thoughtful statement: "The Constitution is nothing but a G*d D**ned Piece of Paper."

    2) Bush got Senate approval for war ONLY if the United Nations found WMD's and negotiations were closed, and the question of the legality of going to war was thoroughly investigated. Rice then took the UN search team out of Iraq, on March 17, 2003 cleared Bush to announce the following: "Iraq continues to possess and conceal some of the most lethal weapons devised." Then on March 19, 2003 Bush, without getting permission from Congress, ordered the invasion of Iraq.

    3) America was never at war with Libya; you are attempting to propagate some more republican/T-baggers smears started by Faux News and Limbaugh.

There is some discussion as to whether they are truly in recess or not. Apparently, if I'm not mistaken, the Senate is banging the gavel so they are in session for all of one minute, to avoid being in recess, and they've done this several times. That's not in session.

I would have a problem with this presidential end-around if the nominee was being blocked for legitimate reasons of being unqualified or disqualified......but that was not the case.

He wasn't rejected. His nomination, just like hundreds of others, is being blocked from even reaching a vote.

Pro forma sessions are a technical gimmick for the Republicans to usurp Constitutional power granted the President.

Gimmicks... that's ALL that the Republicans/t-party has given us.
