What the hell is going on in this country? Children now have to fear for their lives from the police nanny state. Shoot first - ask questions later.

The dispatcher was told it was probably a fake gun. It was a 12 year old. >>>MOD EDIT Off Topic Removed<<< this could have been resolved any other way without the child dying.

Airsoft guns - Laws and Regulations

    • 6mm wide blaze orange tip

In the United States, federal law and regulations indicate that all airsoft guns transported or imported into the country must have a 6mm wide blaze orange tip or a blaze orange stripe 1 inch (2.54 centimeters) thick on both sides of the barrel. Many retailers now place disclaimers on their toy weaponry stating that airsoft guns are sold with this orange tip, and removing it will be punishable by law.[citation needed]

    • Bans

New York City, Washington D. C., Chicago, and parts of Michigan have completely banned airsoft guns.[citation needed]

    • Chicago

Chicago goes even further with their mandates. It is considered a crime to wield a look-alike/replica gun (e. g. toy gun, airsoft gun) in public. Also in Chicago, if a toy gun or replica gun is used to commit a crime, then that person is treated as though they had actually used a real firearm.[citation needed]

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toy_weapon

Averages of four deaths per year, as published by the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission in “BB Guns Can Kill,” October 2004, are caused by BB guns and pellet rifles. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) even warn people that some of these guns, at close proximity, have capabilities of shooting projectiles such as pellets or BBs at velocities that are similar to actual pistols.

So again.. Why was the orange safety tip removed?

If the cops tell you to stop and you pull out a gun in response, that's usually a good sign you intend violence. That wasn't the case here and it is tragic.

These days 12 years old is old enough to have a real gun. If what the cops said is true, they had a genuine reason to be concerned for their lives.

Crazy and deadly thing the 12-year old was doing. Can't blame the police for this one.

When the police....."ordered the boy to raise his hands, but he refused and reached for a gun in his waistband," then he's asking to get killed. The police had no other choice. What is it about people who do NOT teach their children to obey police orders????

ALL he had to do was follow police orders. He'd be alive today had he NOT been stupid.

and they do look like the real thing.

they should be illegal, even with the orange tip.

why? cause they can always remove the orange tip, or paint it black.

The cops told the kid to raise his hands, he refused, instead reached for the gun in his waistband. 12 yr old kids w/a normal IQ knows exactly what they're doing.... and they're also very capable of killing people.

It's a tragedy he had to die, but under these circumstances, no one not knowing it really was a fake gun..... it was bound to happen.

It would be nice for everyone if these lazy parents would teach their kids about responsible behavior, especially when they're out in the public, like a park....

What happened was a tragedy, but what if the gun had been real? Does the cop have a right to defend himself or does he just let it happen?

An orange tip can be painted on a real gun as well.

There are so many things wrong with this case.

    1. Most importantly why did a 12 year old have an airport gun unsupervised.

    2. Why did he remove the Orange tip to make it look. Ore like a real gun.

    3. Why was a 12 year old unsupervised at all? Especially with an air soft gun.

These are the real question. And most importantly why did he refuse the cops order and reach for the gun?

This is what happens when you teach your children to be gangstas instead of productive members of society.

Yeah, this is unfortunate, but so many of the things brought up about this shouldn't be. He was 12 - and? Do you think the police can take one look at a person and identify their age? This same thing was brought up with Trayvon - he was 17 - as if it'd have made a difference if he was six months older, and as if you could take a look at him and tell that he was 5 months, 17 days, 9 hours, 37 minutes, and 15 seconds from turning 18.

Further, the police didn't know it was a fake gun. The 911 caller reportedly, per a few "news" sources, called and told the police that a kid had a fake gun. Now I don't know about you, but that sounds like a whole lot of baloney to me. And if it is true, she should get part of the blame - calling 911 because a child has a toy gun? Really?

But no, you read the police report and they didn't know if it was real or not, but that it looked real, and that the kid wasn't cooperating (he refused to put his hands up) and he was shot when he reached.

This is good shot. The boy reached in to this waitband after the officer told him not to. 2) This was an air-soft that looked like a semi-auto, 3) The orange safety cap was removed. The boy is at fault for getting himself killed, not the officer.

There are 7,8, 9 year old gang banger who would kill a cop with out thinking about. A 12 year old can just as easily kill you as a 70year old can.
