2 weeks to get to 100K schoolkids...and most schools aren't open yet.

"This is such a sobering number," said Dr. William Schaffner, a professor of infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University.
"That's a huge number of cases and a very large number of hospitalizations and deaths -- and more to come," Schaffner said. "Because over much of this country, this virus is spreading unimpeded because so many folks are not getting with the program to contain it."

Fall is going to be lots of fun.

Americans are such profligate sinners; they really should be like subjects of other nations, doing what their Holy Shepherds in government tell them to do without question.

Many of them do exactly like their Holy Shepherds tell them to do. Wear masks, stay home and be very afraid. And don't ask any damn questions. 8)

I can only hope that the 5 million cases is an actual number. With the CDC stating that they estimate that 10x more than reported have had mild symptoms and self-treated (like all colds/flus) or were asymptomatic. If that's the case, we're 50 million toward herd immunity.

Death Count is the only number that should matter and the sooner we get herd immunity, the better

Also, this growth in cases is after lockdowns, after social distancing, after arresting non mask wearers, after fining non-mask wearers and mask mandates. Take-away, lockdowns and masking up are nothing more than useless govt officials giving an appearance of doing something

BleedingHeadKen and Eleuthera aren't exactly making a good case for "thinking for yourself". Anybody with a functioning brain is going to look at you and shake their heads. Those people may not even like being told by the government to wear a mask any more than you do, but they are wearing them anyway because they know it has objective purpose that is relevant to the situation at-hand. They shake their heads at you because they know you're not thinking for yourself any more than a rock does, you're just being a contrarian.

So if you're attempting to promote critical thinking, you might want to apply some of that very thing to your approach.

With a variety of lingering symptoms for many survivors, death count is not the only important number.

Plus, the jury is still out on how much herd immunity we'll be able to generate, especially for those who were asymptomatic and didn't generate the same level of antibodies as those with heavier symptoms.

clearly lockdowns, masking up and social distancing only screwed the economic pooch. It did not stop covid. Like all viruses, it will run its course and people will grow immunity. If the virus mutates, it could be weaker or stronger, but having been exposed to the first version would be good for your immune system just like other viruses as your body learns to combat viruses.

We won't get herd immunity. Not even the Cult will tolerate that level of death, and they love death.

You guys project constantly, Trump is the useless one. He keeps trying to give the appearance of doing something while the disease spreads like fire...

Lockdowns did hurt us. But the hurt was going to happen anyway, and they succeeded in their purpose which was to give hospitals and the medical community a chance to catch up and not be overrun. Some states and the Trump administration largely squandered that chance, but that's a separate discussion.

I meant economically. There's no question they helped with containment and spread.

The economic crisis was also easily avoidable but the so-called representatives from both corrupt and feckless parties failed the American people.

In my city it was the irresistible impulse to go on vacation July 4th week that was the tipping point.

    It only failed because

America started the lock downs etc too late
You lost precious time with a failed test
Once you had a large outbreak there was not enough contact tracing
Borders between states were not closed
    You reopened too soon
And more than any other country you have maskholes who will not do the one thing which has been shown to be effective

And finally you have an abundance of people who obviously know sod all about immune response telling bull on the internet

For heavens sake INDIA is dealing with this virus better than the USA and they have overcrowded slums!

what in the heck does Trump have to do with a virus? He can't make it stop doing what it's going to do; nobody can, not even a Democrat.

Yes please because the more you post the more it is obvious you have a knowledge deficit in this area and should not be listened to.

He has everything to do with a co-ordinated response that would have ensure containment. Instead he spent time doing What he always does - play Captain Chaos

    nice try

The better the immune system, the better chance of fighting off covid or not even realizing that you have it.

Masking up and hiding away isn't the answer

This disease is no big deal as long as we protect our vulnerable. If you don't want this disease, wash your hands, stay home and/or wear a mask. Since my son brought this disease home, we've managed to not let it spread to ANYONE. We need to take personal responsibility and punish those who knowingly spread it. We should get back to work while we still have a country.

If you thought for yourself you wouldn't be relying upon a mask that was never designed to prevent you from catching covid in the first place.

Hey Dr. Schaffner, some CDC estimates place nearly 60 million already infected.

CDC: Coronavirus Has Infected 10 Times More People Than Previously Thought

The coronavirus has likely infected 10 times more people in the U.S. than the current official count reflects, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Hell, we need to hurry and infect 330 million Americans so we can stop belly aching and get back to work.

Suicide deaths higher than COVID-19 deaths amid lockdown, CDC chief warns

July 28, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) – Deaths from suicides and drug overdoses currently exceed deaths due to the COVID-19 virus, Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) director Dr. Robert Redfield warned during a medical presentation earlier this month.

The assumption underlying the bolded is that those who got sick and recovered are now immune.

Changing metrics just muddies the issue, and the issue is that the disease is spreading quickly and killing a lot of people.
