The government can't really detect thoughts. This is opinions being punished by the government. In other words no freedom of speech. Keep your ideas to yourself.

Not really, it just appears to be behind a paywall.

No I won't. I will continue to articulate my ideas here as I see fit within the rules of the forum. BTW, try reading a little George Orwell since you don't understand the use of the term " thought crime."

The consequence of such a law for myself, an Australian, is that I'll start peddling blatantly false conspiracy theories.

Hmmm tentatively calling BS in this one since there's no coverage of this 'alleged' legislation on mainstream news sites to date, even conservative ones that would normally jump all over this kind of story.

So sorry for interrupting all the mutual back patting going on in this thread about how much 'freer' the USA is ...yarda, yarda. yarda. I might suggest in future getting news from sources that don't appear to get the terms 'fact' & 'fiction' mixed up. (I think the teddy bear on the front page must be their lead investigator!)

What is happening in Australia is what always happens when the Left effectively gains permanent control over a nation. First you gain control of the nation's educational system and media outlets and then start passing baby-step laws -- one little law after the other -- to progressively (ha!) restrict traditional freedoms. After a certain tipping point is reached you get an avalanche effect.

England is starting something similar, a £1,000 fine if a person goes out when they are supposed to be self isolating and if they do it a second time a £10,000 fine and somewhere in this I heard the words conspiracy theory. London had protests at the weekend. I think most of the people I saw were not wearing masks so it may have been that that would result in them getting fined as well.

Scotland is not doing the fines. Instead she is bribing people to stay at home, recognising that if people need to work outside home to get paid they likely will carry on working regardless and not get tested and pass the virus on so they are going to get money to stay at home. People who can work from home are being asked to and business's which have asked people to come back are to let them work from home again. People have to leave the pub by 10pm and only extended families - that is a family living in two houses where one person lives alone or one person lives alone with children can visit other each other in their homes.

Firstly, in case you missed it so far there's been zero confirmation from any other source regarding this 'alleged' legislation. Certainly no sign of it anywhere in the Australian media and Jet hasn't come back with anything since the original link to a site with apparently zero media profile. So until otherwise confirmed the entire story almost certainly bogus.

Secondly 'the Left effectively gains permanent control' ???

It may have escaped your notice but we currently have a right wing Federal Government (and have had since 2013). Three of the six State Governments are currently right wing and of the two Territories both are currently 'left wing' but one of those had a conservative government up to 2016. The other has been has left wing for about 20 years or more but had a right wing gov for 5 or 6 years before then and still has a large conservative minority in the house.

May I suggest before you start passing 'off the cuff' judgements on other countries you at least biother check your facts before doing so.

This thread appears to be just another example of people piling in to comment because the alleged narrative supports their own personal biases, never mind the original premise being entirely false. But hey, why let a little thing like facts stand in the way of a good rant.

I am an Aussie. I seriously doubt this report - sounds like a conspiracy to me. Ha.
A bill of rights brings with it one serious problem - government by unelected judges.

Ha. Article says "hand authorities the power to forcibly detain “conspiracy theorists” and people suspected to likely spread coronavirus, such as anti-lockdown protesters and their close contacts."

Actually Minister said: (purportedly) “conspiracy theorists who refuse to self-isolate or severely drug-affected or mentally impaired people who do not have the capacity to quarantine.”

    Nice try

I guessed it would be something like the above. Australia is though giving very heavy penalties for not going by the rules.

On the other hand the number of COVID cases we have is trending towards zero. It seems to be the case that Government gets criticized no matter what it does. Fail to act and impose restrictions that reduce COVID spread - criticism. Impose measures that actually work and do shut down COVID - criticism.

If it wasn't Politicians we were talking about I'd almost fell sorry for them.

I wasn't criticisng you, just noticing it. :) Australia certainly has done very well with Covid19. Mind you 6 months in prison does seem like a very heavy sentence. I assume it is to make sure no one else does it. In the UK in the main lockdown it was mostly those working on how the public should deal with it who were going against the rules. ;)

It's extremely harsh, but I think this is one of the situations where the capacity to do maximum damage is presented. Quarantine is also much stricter than self-isolation.

The state of WA basically has no covid and one infected person can affect the lives of millions and cost the state literally billions. Her behaviour was not unknowing or accidental.
