Very pleased to learn that Australia will be spending billions on American atomic attack submarine technology. There are no details yet, we do not know if the subs will be built in the USA, Australia, the UK or spread among us three but nothing this big can happen without money being spent stateside. That means years of employment for some people in the USA, a good thing.

Also good for the UK, the third party to this deal.

What I do not understand is why didn't the Australian government inform France they wanted atomic power instead of diesel-electric? France has long been making atomic subs, they have decades of experience. Why did Australia's leadership leave the French thinking the diesel-electric deal was just fine all while quietly negotiating elsewhere?

That's the strange part of this.

As for the arms race, well, Communist China started it. Trying to lay claim to international waters, building military installations in those waters. Threatening passing ships.

Australia is doing the right thing in protecting its interests. I'm just surprised they carried it out so incompetently.

This deal is in it’s infancy. We don’t even know if Australia will use the US Virginia Class sub, or the British Astute Class. Either way, this going to be a pricey long term endeavor for Australia. Nuclear attack subs are a whole different beast, compared to conventional subs. We are talking about building the infrastructure required too house, and maintain nuclear subs. We don’t know if the Aussies are going build these subs under British, or American licensing, or if they will be built in the UK , or the US.
If these boats are being built in Australia, then it’s going to take years just to build the infrastructure, and train the Australians just to build the boats.
Next, if we are talking practicality, it would be better for the Aussies to get the Astute Class subs, since the Brits built their last attack sub a couple years ago for their own navy. The only draw back is that it takes the Brits about 11 years to build a single sub.
The US takes only six years to build a single Virginia class sub, but General Dynamics, and the three other companies involved in the process are still fulfilling orders for the US Navy.

Good, our Aussie brothers can get into the SSN game. Stuff the frogs, they should build their boats better.

Also I hope Australia does good with this. They have always been a good ally but currently they are getting a little wacky in their laws and need china even though they have a better rhetoric than some nations on them.

Lol Kerry throwing Biden under the bus.

Says Biden had no clue that France would be pissed over these subs.

Someone should ask him about the security risks involved with giving Australia any nuclear secrets.

It wouldn't be "nuclear secrets" at issue. It would be submarine quieting techniques.

No country can truly be taken if the populace is armed. You will engage in a never ending gorilla type warfare. It may have not deterred the Japanese from attacking us but the generals warned about a gun behind every blade of grass. It is a deterrent wether you like it or not.

General infiltration of Marxism and Chinese influence in govt.

Out of all the common wealth countries of course the isolated penal colony is most susceptible to outside influence.

In 40 years when the aussies get their subs, they will be mandarin speaking and fighting for China.

    We.have to recognize this now.

By whom. Name names. This broadbrush blunderbuss loaded with blanks with no details is just a nothing. Get serious and show me some facts.

Why are "we" more susceptible than "you" to outside influence?

Neither of us will be here then, but I'll be very surprised if that is the case unless the interests of Australia aligned with the interests of China in which case, I would think there would be a similar US interest alignment.

Are you referring to Penny Wong?
    upload_2021-10-6_16-55-51.jpeg

She’s a good senator - but I can see where her very existence might cause conniptions among some especially since she is so far left you lot could not see her with the Parks telescope AND she is gay!

    Two possibilities

    1) we didn’t want China to know
    2) We (Australia) stuffed up

My money is on number two

Absolutely spot on. There is something very wrong about the way we dealt with the French and I am not in the least surprised that they are now ignoring us, and Europe is wary of us now.

I'll put this down to the sheer incompetence of our PM, Morrison, and his Defence Minister, Dutton.

    You are quite right.

If we wanted nuclear, the French had it. In fact the very Sub we were gonna buy from them was nuclear driven, but for some odd reason, we asked them to make it diesel electric.....re-design the whole thing just for that.

There is much yet to be revealed, and in time, the truth will out.
