Oops, sorry, fiddlerdave, I did not see your reply because you didn't reply to me or tagged me.
I apologize for getting too technical at times. My post #22 may sound like gibberish to non-specialists.

Here is the bottom line or digest version:

Diagnostic tests for Covid-19 look for parts of the virus' RNA, called genes. The new variant B.1.1.7 has mutations in the S gene, the one that makes the Spike protein. So if a test only looks for the S gene trying to read the sequence like the old variants had, it will miss the virus and return a false negative. So we need to use tests that look for more than one gene, or genes other than the S one.

On the other hand, there are tests that look for the S gene but also for a couple of different genes in the same test kit.

So this ends up being a neat way to diagnose that a patient has the new B.1.1.7 strain: that patient's test will be negative for the S gene (given that it won't recognize the mutated gene) but will be positive for the other two genes, instead of positive for all three.

So, positive for all three = old variant, the subject has old-fashioned Covid-19
Negative for the S gene but positive for the other two = new variant B.1.1.7, the subject has the new and more infectious Covid-19
Negative for all three genes = negative test, the subject is not infected.

    Is it clearer now?

    ------------

About the vaccines: yes, with people who decline, sometimes we have excess doses that if not used will have to be thrown out since they've been thawed already. They can't be refrozen. So, yes, in my hospital we also make available, at the end of the day, doses that will spoil if not used, as a first come first served for non 1a patients if we can't get additional 1as to come get those doses.

So I hope that in one of these occasions, you get the vaccine. Let me know if you do, by posting in my thread saying that I got the vaccine. I think that the more personal experiences we post here, the more we'll encourage our fellow posters to accept the vaccine when it's their turn.

    @fiddlerdave et al

YOUs are aware why there is no
    vaccine for the "common cold?

Covid is a relative of that virus.

South African Covid variant could be

The coronavirus variant circulating in South Africa could be resistant to the vaccine, a leading expert has suggested but stressed that it could take just six weeks to develop a new jab if one was needed. . . .

    https://www.yahoo.com/news/more-contagious-covid-19-strain-170744884.html

How much more contagious is the new strain?

The strain first identified in the U.K. spreads more easily and quickly than other strains, according to the CDC. The strain was first spotted in September in southeastern England and accounted for a quarter of cases in London by November. By the week of Dec. 9, it was responsible for 60% of cases in the city.

What makes the new strain more contagious?
SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes the disease COVID-19, acquires about one new mutation in its genome every two weeks, according to the CDC. The U.K. variant has several mutations that affect the "spike protein" on the virus surface that attaches to human cells.

"It’s able to bind to the receptors on cells better, and therefore is transmitted better," Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's leading infectious disease expert, said last week.

    Virus can damage brain without infecting it;
hair loss on rise among minorities during pandemic

    Wed, January 6, 2021,
Coronavirus can damage the brain without infecting it

The new coronavirus does not need to directly invade brain tissue to damage it, a new study suggests. Researchers examined the brains of 19 patients who died from COVID-19, focusing on tissues from regions thought to be highly susceptible to the virus: the olfactory bulb, which controls the sense of smell, and the brainstem, which controls breathing and heart rate. In 14 patients, one or both of these regions contained damaged blood vessels - some clotted, and some leaking. The areas with leakage were surrounded by inflammation from the body's immune response, they found.
(Maybe why ibuprofen helps) But the researchers saw no signs of the virus itself

That could have more to do with financial and psychological stress, caused by the government-imposed shutdown, associated economic effects and social isolation.

How about a phenomena known with other viral illnesses

"When someone is infected with a virus that carry such a gene, the viral gene increases the production of the 5α-reductase and the androgen receptor in the scalp of the infected individual. The increase of these proteins leads to hair loss and balding."

I don't discount that possibility, but I still believe higher levels of stress in some "communities" are more likely to be the cause.

Being more sedentary, less physical activity, can lead to lower levels of blood flow, which is correlated to higher rates of onset of premature hair loss.

Aren't the "experts" truly brilliant! The test instantly identified a new strain in Africa and INSTANTLY knows it is OMG!!!! 50 TIMES MORE EASILY SPREAD! A big red light flashing and buzzer going off with a flashing "NEW STRAIN! NEW STRAIN!" and a scrolling warning of "50 TIMES MORE CONTAGIOUS!"

Even masks aren't good enough. Everyone without a government work permit of specific hours to drive to and from essential death-trap work they do must be under house arrest until still another new and never before used type of vaccine is found for everyone in the world to buy.

Damn, even the Bat Cave never had that good of testing equipment.

I heard that COVID is considered more of an affliction of the blood vessels and circulatory system, rather than a respiratory tract infection.

    “ just a bad cold” - don’t think so.

Seems to be the prevailing view this week.

Haywire (good movie too) Immune System seems to be the cause
To my surprise, ibuprofen, an anti inflammatory seems to be of benefit.
Usually aspirin & Tylenol prolong viral illness as immune suppressants.
Now it makes. We should all keep ibuprofen on hand.
The medical community hates to buy into cheap treatments, don'tchyknow.

    First: no panic!
    Second: ok, panic!

Now, the US are not exactly in good conditions about the pandemic of Covid-19 generated by the diffusion of SARS-Cov-2.
Anyway, if I think to my country, we were happy and joyful last September, so happy that we decided to reopen all ... some weeks later the third wave begun! And we were no more so happy and joyful ...

But ... even avoiding a total lockdown, organizing the country on regional base and calibrating the restrictions according to the local R0 [or Rt] ... we have been at least able to slow down the diffusion of SARS-Cov-2 here. It's not the best result ever, but if you don't want to kill the economy of a post-industrialized country ... you can contain the pandemic. It's improbable you will be able to stop it.

Yeah! I'm afraid and certainly don't know which Path is the correct one. I'm of the belief that Anti Masking and large Holiday Social gatherings are responsible for the recent surge in New cases and Deaths at Record levels in the United States, but to close everything down and for Americans to lose everything they have is also going to be catastrophic. It's really a Catch-22, Open the USA completely and overload the Hospitals and cause an insurmountable amount of New cases and Deaths or Close the USA completely and our Economy crumbles and some will never recover. Hopefully something somewhere in between with the Vaccines will get this under control, but I'm afraid were in for a Long road ahead of us. Who's right and who's wrong, not sure, but I think Americans attitude towards this Pandemic is going to bite quite a few of um in the Ass. Thankfully, being a Conservative who's always lived within his means I'm prepared for the Long Haul as long as I manage to not get infected, but a Huge amount of Americans live Paycheck to Paycheck and they're Doomed. Sad that some where so Hellbent on celebrating the Holidays in 2020, but won't be around to Celebrate 2021 and on.

    Winter is here
    in the northern hemisphere
Does your belief account for that?

Covid is a cousin of common cold virus
No common cold virus vaccine because of high mutation rate.
Colds are more common in the Winter and so it goes

    We are all doomed :oldman:

I live in Thornton Heath in South London in the London Borough of Croydon.
I heard that as many as 1 in 30 people now have it here.

I just heard that now the virus will find less and less people to infect here, as we all get it.
I'm finally comforted by the idea of herd immunity.

Since I think/hope/not sick enough or front line worker enough to get a test this time, that I'm just getting over it myself.

That's like Me! saying to you, Don't Smoke in this Restaurant, because I'm concerned about my Personal Preservation.
I don't make up the Laws or the Rules, but if Society decides that the best thing to minimize the chance of You! who might be Asymptomatic from spreading the Virus and adding to the number of New Cases and Deaths is for you to Wear a Mask and Social Distance, then just like endangering people in Public Places with your irresponsible Smoking, which gets you a Fine, You! have to wear a Mask for the Common good of the Community. I believe there's Coronavirus floating around being spread and inhaled from defiant people who don't like being told what to do and I'm pretty sure because of their defiance, they've managed to infect people who ended up Dying, because of their Defiant irresponsible behavior. If someone wants to be an Anti Masker, GOOD! stay in your House and Anti Mask until the Cows come home and just call Grub Hub to bring you Food to eat, but when you come out into the Community, You're going to wear a Mask in Stores, Restaurants and Work, because they all have the Right to tell you to Mask yourself or You're Not Welcome here, NO! Soup for You!.
They don't allow Smokers to blow their Smoke around Restaurants and Stores for others to breathe in their Second Hand smoke, Why should I be needlessly subjected to your Second Hand Coronavirus Particles.
