I have no issue with the charge. I think it's important that this situation was at least as worthy of being charged as the issue of lying to Congress about a blow job.

As to conviction? I hope they take their time and see where the evidence goes. It certainly appears true from the outside. That said, once Trump said, "stand down," they told him to get out of their way. What's up with that? (rhetorical.)

What you're forgetting is that this will likely be a REAL trial this time. Witnesses will be called and nobody knows what will come up. Possibly enough that not even 17 Senators will stand by him

There was no high crime or misdemeanor in either Trump impeachment. There is no such evidence to consider. They were both exercises in extreme partisan politics.

What are these witnesses going to testify to? That Trump told people to let their voice be heard “peacefully and patriotically?”

I could see one or two liberal Republicans from liberal states voting to convict. Susan Collins and maybe one other. There might also be a couple of Democrats who break the party line.

Is this impeachment a wise choice for the US socially at the moment? Surely if Trump was to be impeached that would further alienate and infuriate his followers and make them feel further marginalised?

I understand there are clearly extreme elements on both sides in term of Trumps following and of course the hard left... However would it be wise here not to let this sleeping dog lie? Why cause further division for political revenge or gain?

    Trump is finished either way.

First; he's already been impeached. The Senate will decide guilty/not guilty.

It could prevent him from running for office again.

Also, it tells the future that what he did was at least as problematic as lying under oath about BJ, or listening in on the DNC for a few minutes.

The liberals are not confident that Trump is finished as a viable political opponent. Trump enflamed passions on all sides. I know several people who voted for him and against him.

Many of my friends who voted for him disliked him personally, but they loved the results he got.

The people I know who voted for Biden did so because they despised Trump. They didn’t support Biden himself. In fact most hoped that the Republicans would retain the majority in the senate to stop the liberal agenda.

The insurrectionists were quoting him, word for word.

Without his screaming fraud for months, both before and after the election, this doesn't happen. Period.

I agree in principle... But surely if he ran again he would have next to no chance?!

I've seen the evidence (the social media stuff anyway) and I don't see anything compelling enough to actually bring around a conviction.. He did not directly incite the violence.

He was not quoted “word for word”. Words were intentionally and dishonestly omitted.

Plus there was no insurrection. It was an extreme act of civil disobedience much like what we experienced in many major cities all summer long.

Trump is considering starting a new party. All those 78 million voters voted for Trump and if he starts a new party, they will go with him. The Republican Party is dead.

I think it was Trump's rhetoric and actions towards China that turned some Republicans against him. Who knows how many investments and deals they have with the Chinese government, and how much Trump's actions might have cost them.

McConnell's hatred towards Trump would be more personal though, since his wife is the daughter of a billionaire Chinese ship owner.

The Republican Party isn’t dead. They are becoming more of a party of national populists. There are even fiscal conservatives who abandoned the GOP through the Bush presidencies going back to the party.

You will see chaos within the Democrat Party because of the rush to the hard left.

We shall see what happens during the trial.

Take people like Loeffler, who promised on January 5, to oppose the results. After the insurrection said, "I cannot, in good conscience, support this any longer."

McConnell never spoke a word against Trump, until he outright blamed him for the insurrection.

It is obvious to all but the kool-aid drinkers.

A mobster never, ever, personally tells you he is going to kill your wife. It is very clear, though, that those are the consequences.

Trump said himself, "this is wht happens when you..... do everything I've been pretending will happen for months."

The only proof his cult needed was that he sang the same fraud song, over and over, for months. By election day, it was a foregone conclusion.

Blue want's to keep Trump around as long as possible - seems they got not much of a platform without him -- so used to doing nothing but "BAD Trump" BAD Trump" over and over - like a parrot on a broken Record.

If the Democrats actually go through with it, two things will happen. One, it will fail to convict Trump. Second, they will be shooting themselves in the foot. The 2022 mid term elections will be a come to Jesus moment for them.

It is never a waste of time to do the right thing.

Otherwise, another President in the future will think he can get away with the same criminal **** that Trump did over 4 long, grueling years.

Oh, you mean that infrastructure week that one certain Donald J. Trump promised over 4 years and never, ever delivered?

You do realize how unbelievably hypocritical your words appear to be, right?

If he starts a new party, the result will be a splitting of the conservative vote. Yes, it would harm the Republicans, but neither would the ‘Trump Party’ attract all of those who voted for him this time - many would remain with the GOP candidate. A new party would be a gift to the Dems.

Tulsi Gabbard should form her own a party. She was so popular at the first debate, that the Dems did everything so she wouldn't appear again. I guess it's because she had too much integrity to go along with their agendas. The big problem of any new party would be the financing, since we are an oligarchy.

What a pity, had Trump been given a chance for a second term, he would have broken the power of the MSM and social medias.
